In China, as is well known, English has got a tremendous start över all its rivals, even over Japanese. It is spoken, though in a mutilated form, by several millions of datives in the Treaty Pòrts and surrounding districts;, and is the lingua franca of the country to the same extent as French is the lingua franca of the Ottoman Empire. The University scheme new proposes to English from the bongs and the docks to the universities, and than to place it in a position somewhat similar to that occupied by Latin during the Middle Ages in Europe. THE ENGLISH POINT OF VIEW,

DETAILS OF THE DISASTER.

The Foochow Ecão, of 15th inst., reporta :— In the early hours of Wednesday, the 15th inst, Foochow was visited by a typhoon of nousual severity and although it raged for no more than six hours it easily ranks as the most violent of any typhoon which-bas visited this Port for the past twenty years. On retiring to rest on Tuesday night very few of the com manity had any idea that before morning they

would be roused to do battle for their houses and homes and, in fact, the Chinese floating

population, usually so correct in their judg ment as to the near approach of a typhoon, sidiculed the idea of any such thing impending The evening of Tuesday was calm with bright starlight and certainly gave no indications of being the forerunner of a storm of such great severity. Therefore, it is not to be wondered at that when the wind commenced at about three a.m. practically no one was prepared and the toll taken from the river folk was exceptionally heavy. The wind increased in violence rapidly, reaching its full force at about 6.30 am. wher the barometer in the Club registered 29.10, and there is no doubt that bad it continued at its full strength for any considerable length of time few hontes would have been left in Foochow As it was, practically no house escaped unscathed, all being more or less seriously damaged and presenting all the evidences of the fury of the wind, Several houses were proofed, others lost shutters and walls, while in the case of Jardine's house the chimney fell through the roof and on to the bed of the manager who, luckily enough, had just left that particular spot. At the Chinese Girls' falling immediately in front of a girl who was School a chimney fell through, the debris singding in the door frame in the room below.
