A placky feat was perffimed at dawn yester day in Portsmouth harbour by Lieut. John C. I: odgaon and a bare working crew of volunteers aa board the destroyer Ferral, reportí tha Morning Leader of 29th July.

There was not much else to be seen, haw. ever, for the moment the boam gave under the weight of this 325 ton destroyer, forced against it at 16 or 17 miles an hour, the wreckage swished back and clouds of foam hid the vessel from view.

The volunteers, on board had bend told that they might shut off steam before the impact, and come and lay fit on their faces on deck, in cain the Ferret was swept by the stool wire or was spiked and foundered. The Ferrel could have returned to dock under her own steam, but it was part of the
programmathat she should betaken in charge by the dockyard lugs, and as the surrendered her self to them rumours that she was spiked and foundering were current. As a matter of fact the destroyer was scarcely scratched.
The ship's complement is about so, but for yesterday's dangerous dury fower than ton- volunteers were called for, just enough to command, drive, steer, and stock the vessel. They were readily forthcoming, and they had the satisfaction of having thrown- light on a very knotty problem of saval defence, The Portsmouth boom was supposed until yesterday.to.ba.invalsstablo-and so probably it would prove to be as part and parcel of the Harbour defences, bát the existing type of boom in itself, as a prateciion to non-military ports and harbours, is shown by the Forra's feat to be absolutely useless. --
