«SERIOUS LOSS OY LIFE.

ELEVEN HUNDRED BUILDINGE DESTROYED.

The Japan Chronicle of 17th inst. says:~~Tha earthquake on Saturday afternoon, which had its cantro a little aorth of Lake Biwa, resulted in a serious loss of life and great destruction of property. The centre of the disturbance op. pears to have been not far removed from that of the great earthquake in 1891, and it is worthy of note that the vibration registered in Kobe last Saturday was greater tháo that recorded in Olika in 1891, when so much damage was caused in the neighbouring city. Fortunately, although the vibration was greater, the shocks list Saturday were fear acute, otherwise we thight have had to record a similar disaster to That which, took place on the: 38th October, 1894, when close on 10,000 people were killed nad double that number injured in Aichi, Gifu,, Fukai; and Shiga prefectures, 78 deaths oc curring in Osaka ft. As it is, on this occasion some 40 llyns have been lust, 168 persons have been injured, and 1,100 buildings have been totally destroyed.

acute cover an area of twentyfive miles, and the shocks were distinctly felt at Maizurb and Kanazawa ou the north, Kure on the West Yamada on the south, and beyond Nagoya on the east. In Kobe, as already stated in our last isso, the shocks caused considerable alarm, and at Arima great anxiety, was felt a to the extent of the disaster, especially amongst the many foreigners, spending their bolidays in the mountains. It was even felt at sea, the shock being so noticeable on one of the dinghies ciulsing in the bay that for the moment it was feared the boat had gone over a sandbank. The shock was also clearly perceptible on the 146 ships in the harbour.

A large mooring basin is available alongside por own works for mooring vessels whilst under repairs.

Soon afterwards something like stoke was soen rising from the foot of the hill, but was after- wards found to be vapour issuing from near the source of the Otomi River, where a large area of land subsided. Even at seven o'clock on Sunday night two or three shocks an hour ware being regularly, felt in the neighbourhood of the hill, and the people living thereabout feared

From the official reports-so far received, the district acutely affected was over ten miles long Kod five wide, extending from the bills on the boundary of Omi and Mino provinces, on the east, to Osato-mura, on Lake Biwa, os the west. EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE.

Constant additions are being made to the records of the damage caused by the earth. quake. Several, houses collapsed át Gifu, fis sures opened in the roads in the coighbour hood, and, moch_damage was done in the glass and porcelain warehouses. The electric gene: rating-station of the Gifu Electric Lighting Company was wrecked, and the city on Batur day was in darkness, the people being afraid to fight kerosene lamps. Almost all the in- babitants have been camping out since Satur day, and mosquito-ziots are seen spread in the streets, in the fields, and sometimes under the eaves of the houses. Over zo shocks have been experienced in Gifu, and the people dread returning to their homes in case another sovere shock may bring their dwellings down about them. At a marble-quarry in Gifa prefectura ¡the ride' of a cliff collapsed, killing one man
