FACTS ABOUT FEATHERS.

ENORMOUS SUNS PAID FOR HATS. Apropos the lecture given by Mr. Rothery on the destruction of birds at the last meeting of the National Council of Womch according to Information received by the last English mail Lord Avebury bopes to get the third reading of i his Bill, which probibits the importation to Eugland of feathers for millinery purposes, car- `ried very soon.. · The consequence is that there

has beño a rush by those in the trade to buy all the feathers available at plume auctions, in anticipation of the prices rising to the near fötare.

LADIES LIKE OSPREYS,, During the latter half of last year 19,743-bird of paradise'skion, and 1,411 packages of the nesting plumes of the white heron (representing nearly 115,000 birds), were sold in London, while only a few days ago tho"produce of ovar 80,000 birds, including birds of paradise, king. fishers, parrots, albatrosses, pigeons, herons, and humming birds, and crested starlings- were sold by auction in Mincing. Lane. In ad- dilion 17 packages of osprey feathers, repre- senting the prodäce of about 7,270 egrets, were sold, clearly showing that Royalty cannot al- ways sway the fashions, for although Queen Alexandra bas expressed a wish that ladies should cot wear asprays in their hats, little at- tention apparantly has been paid to Her Ma jesty's desires.

The ospreys mentioned fetched on an aver. age about £hap ounce, and, as each' packet. averaged about 20 oz. over £17,000 wonb psprays were sold. Nearly £2 per skin is paid for birds of paradise, close upon £40,000 worth, therefore, being sold during the latter half of last year.

The plucking is done with the greatest care and skill, in order that the socket of ibe feather shall not be injured, and so spoil a new growth, No pain is caused the bird in extracting the feathers. The Society for the Preventions of Cruelty to Animals recognised this fact many years ago, and deemed the ostrich in so need of iti protection,
