dicate, there is nothing in sight that will causa
■ particularly large demand on the funds in the market, while there are several factors, such as the redemption of loan bonds, the introduction of foreign money, etc., which will go to fuṛther accentuate the sickness of the money' market.
The only means of relieving the existing pressure is la open a safety valve and let out a large portion of the deposits which have now grown to rather embarrassing pro- portions. The principal difficulty with the present situation is the accumulation of an ex- traordinarily large amount of deposits, not a -decline-in-the-amonét of loans, for the latter, though slightly less than last year, is considor- ably larger than in 1905 and 1907, when the business boom was at its height. The carrying out of a lowering of interest on deposits would bave the effect of reducing the amount of the latter to a more convenient level. The besità- tion shown by brokers to do this is evidently owing to the apprehensión entertained by them that if the interest on fixed deposits is lowered to below 5 per cent, the greater part, if not all, of them will be withdrawn from the banks '4" and deposited elsewhere. This will no doubt prova true as the interest paid by the Post Office
