As soon as the Tamul arrived in Shanghai the River Police were informed and inspector Mellows webt as bourd to take charge of the man. With their two boxes they were takes on to the police launch, and thence to the hulk, where their effects were examined to ascertain if possible where the men had come from. The | search, however, revealed no definite clue. The boxes contained a beterogeneous collection of clothing some of which was probably the gift of Chinese fishermen, a loaf of bread, some eggs, cigars, tobacco.matches, and a quantity of fishing gear. Several fishing books beautifully fashioned from mother-of-pearl, were found enclosed in stout wooden cases, and these, and a quantity of twine and steel hanks showed that the mysterion, strangers were fishermen by craft: Other art cles found in the boxes included some primi- tive knives, pouches of woven grass, a neck- face of coral beads, a loin-cloth embroidered with coral, and a woven grass mat. There. was also a bamboo covered with mysterious characters,

code is in the course of drafting and the commer. cial code and civil procedure code arealso being drafted, the one' by Dr. Shinda and the other by Mr. Matsuoka. The civil code is to be drafted by Mr. Matsuoka on the completion of the civil procedure law. The date of above laws coming into force was prefixed at pext year but it is likely to be postponed for some time. Those several codes complied under my supervision are in the main based on the spirit of Japanese laws, but there exists some difference in their aspect betwixt the Chinese laws and Japanese. Particulaars about these matters will be made public shonly,

The facts of the case, he said, were short and simple, and the question then was that of identification whether the jury believed that the person who indicted the wound, which undoubtedly caused the death of the cook, was really the defondant. Witnesses, he added, would be, cailed and they would say that it was the prisoner who stabbed deceased in the left baddux. The object of the pri sober was to assault and beat the deceased, The evidence would go to show that previous to the stabbing deceased and prisoner had had a quarrel. During the attack deceased was thrown to the ground. He was held by the queue and prisoner plunged the knife into his body. After a while deceased got up and went home, taking with him the kiafe used by the prisoner. The matter was then reported to the police, and deceased was requested to go to hospital. He, however, refused, and as a resalt blood poisoning set in and he died in a short time..
The most important witness for the Crown was a woman of the under-world in whose employment was the deceased. She stated the motive for the attack on the cook, One night,
