At the initiation of Mr. Ho Fook a discus jos took place on the question of the admis. sion of students of the Hongkong College of Medicine into the University as under graduates without being duly matriculated. The point the speaker desired to make was that the value of the certificates of the local University should not be below the level of those of a home University. He emphasized the importance of an absolutely solid foutais. tion in the possession of a suficient knowledgeof English and an adequate appreciation of the various branches of mathematics before a student could be admitted to take up the University course. Failing that, it would de- tract from the value of the diplomas grated by the future Hongkong University, pointed out that a change had been instituted to the system of admission of students into the Hongkong Gollege of Medicins whereby a much more severa fest is now applied in regard to English and general knowledge.**

This was due no doubt to the fact that the need of a new building war not so apparent then as it became in 1997, and perhaps the dislike of the older members to leave a ballding which had housed them so comfortably for so many years had something to do with such proposals not being accepted, It is a great pity that they were rejected, for the sum required for purchasing a new site and building a Club house would have been In. finitely less than what we have to pay now However, in 1907, the members at last decided that there should be no more delay, and that rebuilding should be commenced forthwith, decision which I venture to prophesy, they will never regret having taken, and which those who come after them will always be grateful to them for having taken.
