On Saturday night, the members of the, Water Police Giation gave their adsual amoker," which, we will vectors to remark, eclipsed all their previous records, The large matshed, which had been erected on the compound, was very prettily deco sted, and the crowd that it held was the largest yet teen, Ept even standing room being available, Every, nook and corner of the shed was dressed with pot plants and evergreens, while the walls bore humourous, inscriptions relating to "Bobby" A large sized painting at the northern end of the room caused much com ment. It represented a motor car aller a cul lisios, with the unfortunate chaffeur planed underneath, Standing by was a policeman (No. top) which, strange to say, happens to be the Dumber of Sergeant Caygill, shaking his finger. at the chaffeur, and at the side appeared there

Canton, 9th January.

On the 6th instant, apusenger junk going to Ski Kiu from Fatsban was attacked by a bum bar of pirates when carlog Chun Tius. The pirates ransacked the vessel and passengers' luggage and curled away booty to the extent of a few thousand dolları.

As Chairman the police could:pot' have picked out a better officer, then the deputy superintendent (Mr. G. N. Orme} who car ried out his duty to the entire satisfaction of everybody. His humouroun, remarks caused roars of laughter. Take this for in starce. Before the function began Mr. Orme announced that if anyone were found looking worried, or dissatisfied, refusing to encore or even, to jolu (in the choruses, they would, or being found guilty, be put on ginger beer only. Oo a second conviction water only would be supplied!

The programme arranged was a lengthy and very varied one. All ike vocalists acquitted themselves admirably, and the applausen were deafening. Special mention must be made of Mr. Whiteway's "The Penny Whine," which was really loppy, while Mr. Oxberry outdid his former style. It was long after midnight when the function, for which the members of the Water Police may feel justly proud, ended.

When the action-brought by Tam Chak U, a gentleman, residing at 10, Possession Street,

According to that piece of paper the plaintiff claimed the sum of $1,026, mosey alleged to be dus op a promissory note dated 9th July, 1908; and lower down it stated that the sum of $20 was waived so an to bring the matter within the jurisdiction of the Summary Count. The proper way, however, was to claim $7,000 state that the original claim was $1♫16, and then waive the $26.

Mr. Justice Comperis agreed with Mr. Grist, and added that if the latter pressed his objec

Mr. Grist did not want to press the matter. it was only a technical objection, and the mat
