In attempting to give a description of the great annual function, we would rather not use the hackneyed and can ventional phrases usually employed in, de scribing great social events such as that which took place last night, but we are going to do just what the sages enjoided all wise people not to do--we will boldly step where angels fear to tread. It will be admitted that it is not easy by the use of mere words to con vey to the reader's mind balf the hilarious merriment which one and all must have necessarily falt at the joyful gathering where the upper ten did not consider it beneath their dignity, to intermix with the proletariat. The general conviviality and the spontaneity of good fellowship seemed to pervade the whole place, and was perhaps augmented by the absence of any side."
