Peking, 21st October. Both the American and Japanese Ministers have agreed to withdraw half their respective Legation Guards in the first moon of the new Chinese Year,
On leaving the concrete surface of the road- way the coolics find that they can no longer handle the load with ease and every effort is strained to regain the trani track and continue the journey until another interruption of a simi- lar kind takes place.

After all it must be admitted that the car driver are as a body un exceptionally efficient staff of men, and the ordinary traveller must have often observed how exceedingly trying their duties are rendered by the careless, not onty of coolies in charge of other wheeled vehicles, tu: also the apparent stupidity of on tive pedestrians.

At about half-past six, however, in the ten pavary absence of the sister, the deceased left his room (number eighteen), which is situated at the west corner on the third floor, and went
n patient named Wertman to mount a long cane chair and leau over the verandah railing which is between three and four feet high. Before any alarm could be given, the unfor- unate min had toppled over and fell head first to the ground below. The falling was witness. ed by a boy from the wash-house and the alarm was at once given. On one of the sisters arrival at the scene she found the patient lying
in a pool of blood with his brains dashed bat. He was at once picked up and conveyed inside, but all efforts to aid him were in vain,

In this case the reader will remember the plaintiff, who was termed an "ignorant" man from the interior of China, came down to Hỏng. Kong to take passage for Salien Cruz. He had a few friends in the Colony, among whom was the managing partner of the defendant firm. Plaintiff was alleged to have deposited $160
in the defendant firm for his passage ticket. The price of the ticket amounted to $180, and as plaintiff was short of S'o a friend
made up the balance for him.. The ticket was obtained and plaintiff proceeded on board the Swi Sang. He was placed under a medical
examination, but fuled to pass the doctor ow. ing to defective eye-sight. The ticket was returned to the defend ints, and plaintiff drew a portion of the mosty, but the remainder be said he never got.

A witness for the defence testified that when he first met the plaintiff he spoke of going to Balina Cruz. Witness saw plaintiff give his passage money to one Cheng Hai Ying, the father of the managing partner of the defendant firm. Sabo after plaintiff, bad been refused, Passage Cheng Sai Ying died. The money was not handed to anyone connected with the defendant firm.

The fact that the chaadu found did of a keeper of a lighthouse as the China coast not "equal to tabifs, which he now admit. is not a bad of roses by any means, says the ted, did not clear the accused. The Ordinance | Shanghai Timer of 17th inat. merely said that the discovery of zoo talifs was to be held as prima facie evidence of its im- portation. When less than to tahits was dis covered, it was merely necessary for sufficient proof of the importation to be given in evidence. Mr. Elliot contended that when the total was less than 103 tabili, the oaus rested upon the prosecution to prove that there was complicity on the part of the Captaid or crew. This bad not been proved.
Mr. Carver wat quite prepared to edmit that there had been no complicity on the part of the Captain.
The Magistrate acquitted the Captain, and ordered the immediate release of the steamer that she might sail that evening,
