tions that honourable members might deșire to put to me so that I.might afford any additional information in my power... Apparently "my statement was sufficiently explicit and detailed, for no member asked for any addi tional information. 1 have not much to add today. Progress has been well maintained. The tunnel' leading from north and south bas now reached a total of 4,633⋅ feet out of 7,156 For 64 per cent. Progress under the able superintendance of Mr. Waite has till recently. been it the rate of nearly ten feet per day. Latterly, ex oedingly hard rock has been. encount red and this has reduced the rate of progress by about a half, and greatly increased the cost. The Chief Resident Engineer an'i- „cipales an excess on the estimated expenditure on the tunsel which will absorb the saving on earth work. I hope that this heading may be through before the middle of next year. The tising, including such portions as do not need to be lined, is computed at 3.340 feet, vix, one half of the distance peached by the beading, At the end of last year the proportion was only Captain Helms, will be despatched as above
one quarter. The tunnel practically began on on THURSDAY, the 15th October, at Noon.
This well-known Steamer is specially fitted the 1st January, 1917, and the average progress for Passengers, and has a Refrigerating Champer week was 5.8 feet, whereas from January ber which ensures the supply of Fresh Provi. 1st this year the average weekly progress has ́riona, ice, &c, throughout the voyaga,
been 9.76. The proportion of lining to heading as the end of last year was a fourth, and it is' now a half. Much difficulty has been expari- anced in No. 8 tunnal near Taipo. There, continued land slides undid the work as fast at it was done. This has now been overcome and the work is going on,well.
