CHINA AND TURKEY..
THE OTTOMAN DELEGATE
IN PEKING
The Ottoman delegate, sent by the Sultan of Turkey to China to ascertain the real num ber of Mohammedans in the Empire and their prosent condition, has arrived in Faking from your port and met with no less warm reception bare from the Mohammedans, than be received 10 Shanghal and other places, writes the Peking correspondent of the N, C. D. New on 28th ult. He is living in one of the Moham medsa temples, by special invitation of the Mohammedaus. After his affaite are in order here, he will proceed to Yungan, Kansu, Hsin kiang and fli, where Mohammedans, form - the greater part of the population and bave more influence than the Chinese and other paoples. Most of the Mohammedans ja the north-western frontier of China are called Chan- tou Hui, or Mohammedans who wear turbans. They are a very wild and hold people, and it was they who raised the great Mohammedan Rebellions in Hsinklang, and Ili abol forty years ago, ooly suppressed by the troops of the late Grand Secretary of State, Tsa Chung-tang, „after many years' hard fighting. Even at the present time the Chinese Government is pay. ing special attention to the movements of these Mohammedans who are quite randy to create disturbances at any opportuu.ly
With regard to the sudden taking over of the protection of Ottoman subjects in China by Germany from France, a lough Chinesa official recently informed me that the Peking Govern meat, in view of the large number of Moham- medaus in Yuanan, and of the existing Chine French dispute over the Tongking-Yunnan frontier, has instructel Viceroy Hi Liang, of the Yenkwei Provinces to pay special
