COTTON IN THE FAR EAST,
INTERESTING INTERVIEW; -
BONDAY'S COMPETITORS.
Japan and the Japanese occupy a large share of the attention of the Western world to-day. whilst their commercial methods have a very personal interest for the manufacturing and, mercantile community of Bombay, Recently Sir Cowasji Jehangir, accompanied by his son, Mr. Cowsaji Jehangir, made an extensive tour ip the Far East, and his observations and the deductions which he draws from the things are of considerable interest. he saw whilst travelling in China and Japan
clothes, but akers in at prumutta a movenlent in favour of adopting the national dress again. At a party at Baron Hayashi's at which Sir Je Bangir and ble ion were present they saw several ladšou în kinionos and Japanese shoes dancing European dances with members of the European communities
Summing up his impressions of Japan Bir Jehangir comes in the conclusion that although the country is now practically bankrupt, the axes" extremely high and trade in a very depraaded state, Japan will recover, owing chiefly to the extremely patriotic spirit of the people who assist the Government in every way. When the country has passed through the present crisis she will go ahead with leaps and bounds and will become one of the greatest of industrial powers.",

Interviewed by à representative of the Ad- "vocate of India, Sir Jehangir stated he was immensely impressed by the Japanese. Asked if the Japanese spinning mills were up-to-date as regards machinery and construc tion, Sir Jehangir said that the Bombay mitle compared very unfavourably with some of the Japanese mills he had visited. They constructed their mills on an entirely different principle to Iudjan or Europeso mills, preferring a number 'ofabeds of one storey spread over a large tract of land in a two or three storey building. The machinery was first class, and for the most "part came from Europe and America.
It was, however, the enterprise, of the
Japanese that Bir Jehangir was so impressed with Nearly all the mills in Japan, he said, were managed by Japanese who had been trained to Huropean and American methods, and there were very few· Europeans in the | country employed in this industry.

"The visitors were greatly impressed by the educational progress of Japan. Every Village possessed a school and attached to the school was a gymnasium.. Nearly every japan. ese spoke English, and even the rickshaw coolies understood the language and could- read it. In fact so well-informed 'were these lalter that Sir Jehangir and his soo oo many occasions engaged them as guides.
Ja Sir Jehangi's opinion, the attention the Government paid to the mental and physical education of the younger generation would re. sul to Japan making great strides in the future.
"
Speaking of the effects of the Chinese boy colt, Sir Jebangir said the Northern Chinese were indiferent to it, but the Southern Chinese and the Cantonese were very enthusiastic in prosecuting the boycott and would, he thought, continue it for some time.
Tospeaking of Chian, Sir Jehangir was deep- ly impressed with the possibilities of Shanghai, a city which he thought would in time compete seriously with Bombay in the cotton industry" There were already over thirty mills there, and these were being carried on under very dis advantageous conditions, the millowners having ́to pay a heavy tax on imported cotton and also.
to pay beavily for freights,
"In China the Japanese are competing vary successfully with Bombay, are they not?" ask |ed the interviewer,
"Yes, in Northern Ohing particularly ;' in Southern Chipa oot so much: In this con pection, though," continued Sir Jehangir, "i am glad to say that I think there is hope for Bombay in the future.
