EXPERTS GÓ SCAMFERING THROUGH: EUROPE.

▲ marry little band of japanese gentlemen reached London on Saturday (May 2) 05 their way through Europs.

"Round the world in gɔ days" is their bust Hog motto, and they are so lertaking the tour under the auspices of the Amki Shimbun Japanese newspaper published at Tokio and Osaka, with a daily circulation of more than a quarter of a million.

› There are between 50 and 60'lu the parly, Three of the members are accompanied by their wives. The tour is not the outcome of one of those 'vote-snatching "popularity" com petitions, which are being introduced into English journalism now that the 'Limerick competitions are practically "dead" and the

“Buckeye Daisies" from Ohio have gone home again: it is a serious and dign find effort on the part of some of the citizens of Tokio, Oraka,. and other japanese towas to gather first-hand knowledge of the great European countries and the land of the almighty dollar. Each traveller pays his own expenses, which will work out at a little more than £200 a head,

MEMBERS OF THE PARTY. Leading the party-under the guidance of the indispensable Man from Cook's-are Mr. K. Sugimora, literary editor of the Tokio Meshi Shimbuh, and Mr. M-Tsuchiya, Tokio-corres- pondent of the Osaka Asahi Shimbux; and

ft is primarily ad educational and sightsee- ing tour," said Mr. Sugimura to the forming Lander representative last night, "but it is a thoroughly pleasurable outing as well." -

DELIGHTED WITH LONDON.

I've been le London once before," said Mr. Sugimura, "but vary few of the others have ever seen Europe till that trip, and very few of them can speak English. But already they're delighted with London,"

London on a Saturday afternoon and a Sun. day is hardly the bustling work-a-day m'atropolis, but the keen-eyed Japanese have been quick to notice some of the characteristic features of city lifeși de

J

"I almost worship London," said Mr. Sugi. nura. "I told, all our peuple waat to expect” They could scarcely credit it all, but now they believe. The orderliness of everything-the people, the streets all so well regulated. That was the first thing that struck us all. Thes your buildings are so massive, so impressive- not always so beautiful!"

A visit to Hyde-park yesterday morning was. a revelation to the visitors, "We've nothing lika it, in Tokio," said Mr. Sagimura. "Your gardens, your beautiful green lawns, astonished.

+

After studying England through their Japan- ∙ase eyes some of the enterprising spirits among the visitors on Saturday were eager to see how Japan, appears in English eyes, and so they dropped into the Savoy Theatre to hear "The Mikado."

"VERY AMUSING."

It was very amusing," was Mr. Bugimurg's description."The music was pretty-we liked it. But the dresses and the play--it was cari cature, not much like theʻreal Japan of to-day. But we enjoyed it, and we were glad to see that the audience enjoyed it.",

To-day's programme comprises a visit to St. Paul's and the Crystal Palace, Ten days are to be devoted to London and its surroundings. Paris is to follow, and then the programme is to be rearranged to permit Italy to be included in the itinerary, which will add seven days to the originál 93 r f- the tour.

A dash through Germany and Russia (in: cluding St. Petersburg and Moscow) will. succeed the visit to italy; and leaving Moscow the littla bind- will entrain for Vladivostock, which they hope to reach on 12 June.

On 15-June they are due to reach home again, after a journey of more than 20,000 miles."
