"Lately young men who have emerged from the Higher Commercial Schools or Higher Schools have found situations in foreign firms in fair numbers, and there are now more com paratively steady men, and some of really good character, to be found among junior banke or
clerks of foreign firms. But the writer insists that many of the senior bunto with great ex- perience and good means sõll have the feelings of the old yarktki-mong, and the younger, men are liable to follow in their footsteps. The foreign-firm character" (shokwan katagi) is still in evidence in the most important foreign trade port of the Kwansai district. "If it is of primary importance for the subjects of our
Empire to strive to manifest or give full play to Yamato dámahali. in commerce

He proceeds: -"The spotles's trousers: with themark of the folds showing conspicuous- fy, the snow-white high collar, the necktie of bright colours, and the pattern of the staff of the sack-over-coat redolent with the smell of foreign:make, a pair of spectacles to match, tha glazed hosts, the style in which the bair is groomed, the drooping moustaches-ail those are things which the foreign-firm race are worried about all the time."

A well-known authority on foreign firm affairs, employed by the Government of a cer tain foreign country in Kobe, one day remark ed to the writer:-"There is a god, which the foreign firm banto, all worship devoutly. It is the god named Borol (large pröfit with little work). Before the god of Borot, they will sacrifice, everything without shame." Thin authority added: In worshipping this god, .*foreign-firm race' bave one word always on their lips, that' is the word, commission," Commision in everything. In order to obtain: commission they will risk all dangers without fear or ibame. Hate is an instance, which is not an old story. One of these worshippers of commission, misrepreschting bis concubine at his native village as a sister, offered her to a foreigner in charge of the export department of his fim-The-offer-was-accepted,-and-as-a- result the banto was placed in a position which cotilled him to large commistion every month. This authority further added that the practice of offering their concubines to for- eigners was very common among the "foreign 8, LEIGHTON HILL firm people"; it amounted to only a trifling
would not hesitate even to sell their own wives. Whenthey cannot make money or get commis sion by selling merchandise, they will sell their own concubines or wives without shame to for eigners. "Among such persons may be found some who would not hesitate to self their own country, so long as they can make a large profit with little work. As an illustration, the, an- thority pointed out to the writer that there liver in Koba a Japanese, who carried about with seeming pleasure a false report of a Russian victory, which emanated from a Russian source, during the time of the war. Considering thinga from this point of view, it is necessary to se- rlously consider the question of clearing out the "foreign fim character" (yaikikl-mono-ki- Jahitan), who sie anti-Japaneie, from'this come mercial port of Kobe, and thus assist in the furtherance of the foreign trade of the Empire. -Japan Chronicle.
