algnificant on account of Professor Fryer's long residence in Chins.".

In the course of his lecture to said that Americans do not begin to realize what is take. ing place in China, do not realize that with the departure from conso vatism and the acceptance of a form of Occidental civilization she may go further and faster than have evan, the Japanese. He pointed to the millions of people at her commod, to the rise of the "China for the Chinère" movement, to the acceptance of modern methods, of education even to the adoption of the higher education for women and to the increased tendency to ward the growth of a teal national spirit through, the enforcement of the teaching of one dixlect and the spread of railroads, resul! log in the ce, traliz'ition of power.

He said that if they continued to learn se they are doing now, and retained independent existence for another generation, China would, have an army and navy ready to meet any of the world's great powers.

His lecture, produced a decided sensation among the students and visitors, who packed the hall, as Professor Fryer is recognized as porhaps the most careful student of Oriental affairs in California.“
