I have had several opportunities in Torres Straits, and New Guinea of studying savage languages. Some of thate had never before been adequately Investigated by a European, and their grammatical structure was practical | ly unknown. The problem set before me was, not so much to find out what words were used for travellers and missionaries had collected vocabularies-but to find out how they were used.
