O THE HOUSE

BACK TO PUBLIC, LÍFE, AS AN ELECTED IRISH PEER:.

Lord Carron has entered the House of Lords as a representative Irish pear. WW

Lord Carzda's consent to stand for election for, the vacandy, Caused by the death of Lord Kilmaine is announced in a latter, which he has sent to his fellow Irish pears, Simultane ously a letter written in coniultation with the Marquess of Lansdowne has been written to the nable electors by the Duke of Abercorn and Lord Londonderry, recommending bim to the suffrages of the whole body of peers.

THE ONLY CHANNEL OPEN, Lord Curzon's letter to the Irish peers is dated Hacewood, Beslagstoke, 27 Dec, 1907, and is as follows:

My Lord, Having been asked by influential members of the Irish peerage to allow myself to be nominated for the vacancy among the representative peers, caused by the death of 'Lord Kilmaine, 1 have consented,

When an Irish peorage was conferred upon Ime by her late Majesty in 1898; it was, with a view to my returning at fater date to the House of Commons, and for long this was my

amblifon. The strain, however, of my work in Inļa proved too much for my strength, and medical opinion has driven me reluctantly, to the conclusion that I cannot re'enter the House.

In these circumstances if I am to be of any service in public life it is in the House of Lords alone that opportunity can be found. But I am, unfortunately, debarred from entering that Chamber by the ordinary channels by the.re. fusal of the present Prime Minister to allow me to take my place with all other ex-Viceroy of fadia, upon those benches. -

I have entered into this explanation lent it should be thought that I am seeking at the hands of the Irish peers an honor which might be open to me by other mess. I readily admit that there are many considerations which may induce them to prefer a peer who is direct ly connected with, Ireland, and no one would have less cause than myself to complain if this proved to be the case.

At the same time, the leading Irish...peers' upon whose initiative I am acting have led me to think that my return to public life, through the only channel that appears now to be open in me, might not be unfavorably viewed by their colleagues. I need hardly assure you of the strong views which I held about the main tenance of the Parliamentary union between Great Britain and Ireland and, (hould 1 be returned to the flouse of Lords, it will equally be my desite, to take an interest in thane Irish affans which are the special and natural, com- caro of the important, body whose suffrages I hava The honor to seek.-1 am, etc.,

CURZYN OF Kedleston.

SUPPORT FROM THE LEADERS.. The letter from the Duke of Abercorn and the Marquess of Londonderry, is dated from 35, Parkest, London, W., Saturday, 23 Dec and is as follows;

My Lord. The sudden death of Lord Kilms ine has created a vacancy amongst the Irish Representative Peers. Several candidates have already invited us to give them our support. We have up to the present pledged ourselves to no one-for this, amongst other reasons, that we have become aware that Lord Curzon of Kedleston is willing to allow his name to be put forward,

MCGREGOR BROS, & GOW, Hongkong, 8th February, 1908.

BOSTON STEAMSHIP COMPANY, NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

STEAMSHIP KUMERIC FROM TACOMA, VICTORIA, YOKO HAMA, KOBE, MOJI AND MANILA,

It was at one time hoped that he would be induced to seek election to the House of Com- mons; and it was, no doubt, in view of this possibility that an Irish poerage was conferred upon him. We'regret, however, to say that the state of bis health readers it undesirable. for him to return to the House of Commons..

There will, we presume, in these circum stances, be no difference of opinion si to his tness for a seat in the House of Lords, where his presence would bring a grast-accession of strength to the Unionist party. Upon-the other hand, it may not unnaturally be falt, that at the present time a peer, more closely con- nected with Ireland should have the strongest claim upon his fellow peers. We can, how ever, slate with confidence that, should Lord.ture, Curzon be elected, he would consider it his duty, as a representative peer, to devote special attention to Irish subjecu.

"In these circumstances we have decided to give our voles to Lord Curzon; and we earn.. enly trust that he will receive a measure of support sufficient to ensure his election.

HE above Steamer having arrived, Cor- signees of Cargo are hereby requested to send in their Bills of Lading for Countersigna-

and to take immediate delivery of their Goods from alongside.

Cargo impeding the discharge of the Vessel will be landed and stored at Consignees' risk and expense.

We have made it our business to confer with PEAK TRAMWAYS COMPAN

Lord Lansdowne, and we are able to say that, whilst he regards the malter as entirely one' for the decision of the Irish peers, they would, in his view, be fortunate if they were to secure a representative of such conspicuous ability and distinction as Lord Curzon.
