There were the Commissioner and his wife, Miss White, an effer sister of Mts. Bernard, Miss Field, who, arrived recently with Mrs Bercard from England on the S. Durig the night Mrs. Ber Bard and Miss White were taken seriously ill, while Captain White and Miss Field were also dowell. Captain White administered medicine to his aunt and her sister, and in the early morning the Civil Surgeon was called in and rentained in attendance till the end,

Both cases were immediately diagnosed as cholers, and Lieut. Colonel Crawford, LMS, who attended to the patients with Capt. White, has thirty years of experience in India. Mes: Bernard died at half-pist one o'clock, and Miss While at three o'clock on Monday afternoon, Mr. Bernard had been perficily well up to this 'time, and had been beside his wife throughout the attack. The loss'was a sharp blow; but the Commiss oner was able later in the afternoon to write to the Reverend Stuart Clark, of the old Mission Church in Calculta, Mr. Bernard was an Evangelical trustee of the Mission Church. The Reverend Stu C'irk arrived

in Houghly on Tuesday. While the double funeral was taking place Mr. Bernard was taken seriously ill during Tuesday at orgnon, and died alien minutes to ten in the evening, same time previously having passed into a state of heavy unconsciousness. Both the Commissioner and his wife were aged 44 and Min White was two years their senior, All the deaths were certified to be due to cholera and in the opinion if Major Clarkson the disease must have been transmitted to the dinner plaies, which were wiped by the "hamns" washed at the burning glas, Cap tain White and Mist Field were married quiet. ly on Monday and have gone to Kurseong.

Mr. Commissioner Bernard was a binther of Mr. Bernard, of the Bombay-Burma Trading Corporation, Rangoon, who took part in one of the matches there against the Straits cricket team laat Christmat. MASTERS, SERVANTS AND OPIUM. Ichang, Br. 65, 1,238, L Jones, 5th Jan,

Few people; we bel eye, will question the wisdom of the remasks made by the First "Additional M. g'strate in the judgment which was delivered by him in what is generally called the Catchick case. His Worship Very truly pointed out that if a master were made: responsible for the scis of seivants, especially with regard to breach of the Oplum Act, no one would be safe. To quote a conspicuous

instance of the risks one runs we might recall the fact that a large quantity of opium was ance discovered amongst the luggage of a Chief Commissioner of Burms on his re- turn from a visit to Calcutta. It was with considerable feelings of trepidation, as can well be imagined, that the then Exciso Su- perintendent, the late Mr. Lewis, approached the Chief Commissioner of, Burma with the

request that he might be allowed to search His

Honour luggage for opinm1! The search

was, however, carried out at old Government | Hoose, when to the Chief Commissioner's en tire astonishment some fourteen balls of oplom were found concealed in bags and port- 'manteaux, two bring actually unearthed from

a hand bag. It was of course the private en

terprise of some of his servants, and His Hooour ascaped prosecution, but it would have been a decidedly awkwind situat on for an ordinary citizen.-Rangoù Gozult.
