The son of a wealthy Moscow merchant, be; had no need to bother about earning a living. But one day, when he was 19, an old lady in good society who wished to adopt him, and wish whom he was on confidential terms, said sombe thing concerning a big robbery. that had taken place in Moscow. Having the detective' in? stinct, he set to work quietly to find out all he could about her acquaintances.
What he found aroused his suspicions and he took them to the chief of the Moscow police, The latter told him to continue his watching, and to get further into the confidence of the old lady. Some weeks later no fewer than 43: people were arrested, and were afterwards proved to belong to a well-known badd of ctj- micals. They ail received life sentencal, which was as well, perhaps, for M. Persitz.
