The Impending Railway Strike.

London, 4th November.

The majority in favour of a strike, a shown by the ballot of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, was 78,152 not 18,152, as reported yesterday.

86,925, out of 97,033, favoured a strike, and 8,773 opposed it; the rest did not vote: The result was announced at a maks meet- ing in the Albert Hall, at which 10,000 rail way men were present. "

Mr. Bell was enthusiastically received, and the meeting resolved to support any action the executive deemed necessary.

*Later.

The Financial Bituation." The raising of the Bank rate to 6 per cent. and further engagements of gold in London for the United States of over $3,000,000, "making a total of 832,225,000, has severely depressed the stock-markets in London, and If the demand continues the possibility of even an 8 per cent. Bank rate in London' is anticipated.

The monetary stringency in America is so intense that even the New York Municipality is paying its employees in cheques, and the Steel Corporation has instructed its subsidi ary branchu, with a weekly pay roll of *$3,000,000 to pay only so per cent, in cash.

The sobject is one which has been under careful consideration and investigation by the Com- mittee, and a circluar was issued on the sub Ject in June, special attention being then di rected to the recessary methods of procedure in cases of infringement. The Committee has now been specially requested by Mr. Hisamoto, of the Patent Bureau, to make known as widely as

They took the chain out of the sand and drag. 10,934,134 ged it to their boat, which was rua up on the shore. They had no reason to suppose the chain belonged to anybody.
