COMET DISAPPEARS.

SHOWER OF METEORS TO BE EXPECTED."

Misguided · people who have lately been spending their evenings quzing into the liesvanu in a vajo, search, for. Daniel's Comet 'will' be encouraged to learn that its career in over for

the present. Daniel's comet was an early riser.

It was only visible in the early moming, and though, of course, the watchful Astronomer oral at Greenwich saw the comet and secured. a number of most successful photographs, a great many other unsuspecting people saw nothing of all,

However, though the comet is no longer. visible, it is just possible that following across- the heavens is a mighty train of metaors, which on Thursday night next will break Into

a magaificent display. This display cannot be guaranteed, but on Thursday the point of the earth's orbit and the comel's orbit will be almost in friendly touch at a distance of 100 million miles.

THE FOURTH THIS YEAR.

The comet which has caused such a `furora was discovered in the middle of Juss by Prof. Daniel, the American astronomer, at Princeton, aller whom; it has then ramed. Officially it is ear-marked. D because it i the fourth discovered this year, but it has been the most brilliant seen since st8a. ́ ̧Itu, fight across the heavens was somewhat ill-timed for the sight-seeing 'public, for bád it but delayed its departure when it started some ages ago, by two months, we should have seen a night tả. rank with Donati's Brilliant comat of 1858, Coggin's comet of 1874, or Tebbuit's of 188г.

As it happened it cams nearest to us át an onfavourable time at the beginning of August, the distance then being seventy millions of miles,

A "Morning Leader representative was atsured at the Royal Observatory that Daniel's comel has never been abserved bel fore, and as to its returning a few million years bence—well, that has not yet been settled. Some are such elingated orbits that they never ratura. : Others come back smiling after a few thousand years. For instance, ›

years' hence-in May, 1910-Halloy'ı comer will returo, for Halloy's comet makos an appearance every 75 years. Halley was the second. Astronomer Royal at Greenwich, and it was fron his studios and discussions ip 1687 that he discovered that some are periodi- cal comets.

IT MAY RETURN,

„Two or three years hence, when all the facts- In connection with Daniel's comet hava been well considered, it, will be possible to decide' the point as to its being a periodic comet..

It is a strenuous life of strife, however, that a comet liver, for it is in perpetual war with the sun. Light has a repulsive effect upon the unknown and rare gates of which comets are composed, and these are driven inte loog talla reaching millions of miles. The recent comet had at least 25 of those tails, noms being short", and curved as though offering resistance with denser gases; others stretched away to a dis. tance computed at eight millions of miles, and many millions of miles in dapib,

But so well conducted in traffic in the heavens that the passage of such an object causes no obstruction.
