Catching fish, measuring and masklog them and then returning them to the sea with the chance of reading them later la part of the work carried on by the Marine Biological An sociation of Great Beltalo.
By means of a steam trawler the fish are, caught in the usual way. Each baul is care- fully recorded, the fish are counted and mea- sured and all details of locality, time, number, species, sex and size are pui dawn, together, depth and bottom of the ses, the kinds and with accurate observation on the water, the
quantity of food available, etc. These data aros subsequently tabulated and charted.
The method of marking the fish is interest. ing and, has been attended with valuable results. The fish chiclly used during the few years the experiment has been in progress have been plaice, because the proposals have heep made to interfere with the catching of a them were based on inadequate knowledge..
The fish are marked on the dotsal surface with a very thin convec metal disc bearing a number. This is attached to a fine silver wire which is passed through, the thinner part of the fish near the fin and secured on the under side by a small bone button. The fish do not appear to suffer inconvenience and their growth is not interfered with in any way..
The thoroughness with which the North Sea is' swept by the nets of the fishing fleets is indicatesa Typhoon demonstrated by the fact that out, of 5,039 - to the South-Eastmarked plaice of all sizes 992 were incaptured": of the Colony.

Black Signats indicate that the centre n believed to be less than 300 miles away from 'the Colony.
The above kignals will, as heretofors, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such positions or are moving in such directions that information regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shippi'g' leaving the harbour.

EXPENSIVĖ PALATHS,
THE PUPES OF AESTHETIC SENSES AND
VERY PLEASING FLAVOURS.
Physiological chemists occasionally delight: to tell us that we are the dupes of aesthetic senses and pleasing flavours. Men will pay, they say, half a guinea for a pint of turtle. soup which, from a hutive point of view, iz, not worth a twentieth part of that, sum. Oys ters, we are told, are an extravagant form of food, since fourteen of them do not contain as much nourishment as a single eg, while it would require the ingestion of no less than 200 good oysters before the protein equivalent of a pound of beef was reached., Caviare, again, is oot to be compared with the bloater as re- gards its nutritive value; indeed, the latter "offers the largest amount of nutriment for a given, sum of any animal food,"
It is evident if we regard these conclusions seriously that a large section of the human race is wickedly indulgent, caring..more. for the palatable than the nutritious quality of food.·' The same appears to be true in regard to be. verages, and even in the case of cigars there is no difference, chemically speaking, between the penny Pickwick and the shilling Havanss.
The difference, of eleven peace is paid for flavour, and flavour alone. Physiologically, it is possible that a "brandy and soda "costing say one shilling is just as satialaçtory as a "pint" of champagne at five shillings. Similarly may be said that a pint of kser at sixpence is 'quite as good, dictically speaking, as a small battle of Chateau Margaux at three shillings and sixpence.
There are, however, clearly instances in vi which in no sense can the nutritive equivalent of food and beveriges be summed up as so many pounds, shillings and pence. How often it is found for example; that the invalid may be tempted to take a few oysters in preference to a small' beef fillet, or some turtle soup, when......... calf's head, the basis of mace turtle, would i. Three Lights Vertical, Green Green Green, scarcely appeal to him, even although it may, indicates that a typhoon is believed to be be more than equal in nutritive value to the only reptile used to any extent as food in this Country. When a person refuses to take a it may be, because it is not templing to the given foud, however nutritive and wholesome-
sight or the patate, it is in many instances probable that if he struggles to overcome his fastidiousness such food may prove to lax bis digestive functions and may even cause gastric, trooble.

The chemical analysis of food and physiolo gical experiments in the test labe, do not take""" into account this psychical factor of digestion, for the digestive process is well begun when... the sight of fond is pleasing. On the contrary, when food does not appeal to the eye it is likely not to appeal to the stomach.."
