The stern chow are comfortable enough, but the Lintan is distinctly the one to make the trip in. She has excellent cabin accommodation, a nice saloon, and Capt. Wuchow is situated below the confluance of the Fu-ho with the West River. The Fa-ho, which washes one side of the city is source of much trouble when in freshet in the summer. Its mouth is then almost impassable, whilst dangerous eddies and currents are here formed in the West River. The most con spicuous building on approaching
Wuchow is Mears. Jardine, Matheson and legs, in one of which the Commissioner of Customs has recently resided. On my former visit he had lived in a yames in the native city. The Customs office is still on a pat (pontoon) on the river. Most of the business indeed is done on paf. The Linian was made fast to two, into which she discharged as late a godown, and where the export cargo is collect ed for the down trip. Some little inconvenience is caused, by the Consulate being situated the other side of the Fu, but with the present volume of trade it is perhaps not serious.
