Parsons interested in the deluge of the Volunteer Reserve Association lamed out is large numbers last Tuesday afternion, when the annual meeting of the Association was held in the City Hall. His Excellency the Governor Six Matthew Nathan, who was booked to pre- sent the prizes, presided over the gathering, and was attended by Sir Henry Berkeley, the president, and Mr. G. H. Wakeman, the hon. secretary,

"The twentieth ordinary "annual meeting of shareholders of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Cos Lede was held at the City Hall, at 12.10 p.m., last Wednesday, for the purpose of receiving the report of the directors and the statement of accounts for the year anding siet Décember, 1956, at There were present The Hes. Mr. W. J. Gresson (in the chair), Sir Paul Chater, C.M.G. Messin. A. G. Wood, N. A. Siebs, E., Goats, the Hon. Mr. E. A. Hewett, Muir. G. E. Medhurst, D. M. Nissim, A. 3. Raymond, A Haopt, O, R. Lensmann, and the Hon. Mr. Ed. Osborne (secretary); Messrs. 7. F. Hough, 1. Orange, He Fook, F. E. Ellis, W. Kew, E. Jones E. J. Hughes, and G. de Champesox: The Secretary read the notice calling the meeting.

The Obairman and Gentlemen, With your permission I propose to take the report and accounts as read. The recollection of the damage done by the fierce storm that pastod over the Colony in September last," must ha fresh in your minds, and it is therefore unneces sary for me to picture for you the wreckage and destruction of our property is seen on the afternoon of the 18th of that month. Your directora desired to place before you a foll statement of the actual loss caused by the typhoon, or typhoons, and the figures now sub- mitted which have been, the subject of much consideration, will, we trust, have made the position quite clear to you. To carry on the current work, it has been necessary to provide additional lighters, and the rebuilding of the wharves will commence on the arrival of the Ironwork, now shortly due, We propose at present to rebuild only one of the large plers, and with a view to economy, are stilising as much of the old wood as, in fit for the purpose. As you are well aware It has bean our custom to appropriate an nually from profits, large sums to write down the book values of your various assets, 'and the wisdom of this policy is now more than demonstrated. Under the circumstances your directors have not considered it necessary le make any provision for the wharves and lighters totally destroyed, as the value of those remaining far exceeds their book value. You will observe that we have to provide out of the earnings of the current year a further sum of $52,000 for actual losses, and I trust that never again may our Colony or company experience such a disasterous storm. Turning to the Accounts, there is nothing that occurs to me requiring special reference, but you will be pleased to note that working shows an increan- ed profit of $16,940.07 after payment of $8,140.38 for miscellaneous typhoon expenditure. desire to express the board's appreciation of the cheerful, energetic and capable manner in which our staff, in face of great difficulties, continued the company's businus with practi- cally no interruption, and with, we trust, but slight inconvenience to its constituents." THE EXTRAORDINARY MEETING. An extraordinary general meetings of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, Ltd, was held at the City Hall, last Wednesday at 12.30 p.m.

Mr. Orange seconded the resolutions, which were adopted.

The Chairman- thank you, Gentlemen, for your attendance.

Addressing the audience the Governor, said he approached the Secretary of State on the subject of the Volunteers and the Volun- teer Reserve last year, that was to say when be forwarded the report of the year ending March gist, 1906,

He stated that the Hoogkong Volunteer Reserve Association continue to maka most satisfactory progress, the member ship having increased from 76 to a total of a30 during the year under review. Of these the Bo most efficient members put in on the average 15.95 attendances at the ranges and made an average score of 47 out of possible 70. The remaining 150 put in on the average 5.87 for attendances, and made an average score of so under similar conditions, "We want to have a high average; that is even more important than that a few men should be crack shots. As I read that extract I vestared to mention a remark made on the report it con- tained. This report deals with the Volunteers and the Volunteer Reserve, and was sent by the Secretary of State to the Colonial Defence Committee for their observation. They made observations on certain details, then added the general remark, "Great credit in due to the British civil population for their liberal per- sonal support of the various forces" (applause). The remark of the Colonial Defeate Committee was sent to the Army Council, which body concurred. Continuing, his Excellency said that he certainly adhered to the remark he made last year respecting the neces sity of shooting at longer mages than 500 yards. "Sir Henry," he said, "ays it is not practicable to have a range of 600 yards at the Peak, but it has since been reported to be prac ticable. His Excellency, before taking his atat, asked that a cordial vot of thanks be given to the president of the Association (Sir Henry Berkeley), which was carried by ac clamation.'

Sir Henry Berkeley returned thanks."

After Mr. Robert Shewan had addressed the company shortly, he called for a vote of thanks for the Governor and the meeting terminated.
