"VADE MECUM OF THE FAR EAST

There is many a book which is flamboy. antly described, as the only trus commercial pade mecum, but if the term was ever deserved in the Far East it belongs andoubtedly to that massive tome known familiarly as "The Di- rectory. There is a solidarity, ad air of affluence and business-like importance about "The Directory and Chronicle" which alone would render it of vajus as no evidence of wonh and merit were these attributes not surpassed by the fact that the volume is indis pensable, How the people in the early days of the Colony's existence managed to get along without this office lexicon it is impos. sible to conceive, for they must have been handicapped at every stage in the every-day, enlightened days when the way is made easy routine of office work. It is impossible to estimate the amount of labour and toil which bave been bestowed in the collection and collation of the data which it exudes at every pare, but we can appreciate the care which has been taken to ensure accuracy and completeness. So far as we have been able to discover nothing has been omitted which should have found a place within its covers. The 1907 edition is in every respect admirable. The section devoted to treaties has been enlarged by several im- portant additions which will 'prove essential to those concerned with the conditions of interna tional trade and mutual agreements in the Far East.
