Mr. Taurubara, Director of the General Affairs Bureau in the Residency General iti Korea, spoke at some length on the works initiated by the Residency-General. In the course of the speech, Mr. Tauruhara stated that the number of Japanese ranjdonts in Koren had now reached 110,000, while the trade between Japan and Korea now exceeded Y33,000,000. SHEWAN, TOMES & CO. Homekere, 15th February, 1907.
Mest Ofiu and Shindo, Progressists, de- sired some information as to how far the Gov. ernment intended to establish Japanese in fluence in Korea, nt the same time pointing out that Japan was trying hard to lead the Koreans into the path of civilisation, and was' engaged in developing Korean resources with all possible patience.
Mr. Takenouchi wanted to know the future policy of the Japanese Government in dealing with Koren, and Mr. Otsu pointed out that the Japanese Government was responsible for the defence of the Korean frontier on the Yald and on the Tamen, so that the Government need not make any agreement in conducting forestry business on the banks of those rivers. The Japanese military authorities in Kores, he un- derstood, had authority to dispose of the forests at their own will. Was this a fact?
Mr. Tsuruhara, in reply, stated that the future policy of Japan towards Korea was a [355 matter which concerned the Ipanese Govern
ment, and he was not in a position to make any answer. As to the second question, ha would make his answer in camera.
