The Shanghai favourites, Marsala and Black Panay, were the last couple to walk up to the flag. There was to difficulty in starting the field. Southwold looked a picture of beauty at the past, while Black Pansy moved in good spirit around his rivals. When the Hon. Mr. May dropped
the Rag Southwold was on the rails, then Spring Rose, Ben Eian and Beaufort on the Quiet course, Ben Elon had a very slight. advantage from the resibul Beaufort, bent on making the running for is stable companion, rated away from the field. In his wake was Ben Eion, Sour wolk, jid, Spring Rase fifth, Cadzow sixth, and Black Pansy many lengths behind, last. Beaufort raced for all he was worth, and when the spectators' stand was passed Beaufort led, with Matsala second. Hen Bion third, Cadzow fourth, Southwold fifth, Spring Rose sixth and Black Pansy, apparently io no great hurry, last. „This was the order until the field got well within the Bowrington Gate and were negotiating the climb, when Master began to assert himself. Confident of his fine mount he now called upon the Rose to spurl up, which Spring Rose did, in magnificent myle. Making his way up rapidly and surely; he overtook each of his leaders successively and when, the Rock was reached, Spring Rose led the field, Black Pansy second, Ben Elon third, and Marsala a long way behind, fourth. Spring Rose's win was never disputed. The race in the winning post was a grand one for places. Southwold suced beautifully but was too late to make pp Black Pansy's advantage, th whom he lust for second place by a length and á half, Marsala was a bad fourth. Ben Eice way fifth, Beaufort sixth, and The Pride of Ɛad--|| xow finished last. Mr. H. N. Mody led Spring Rose into the paddock. Messrs. Master and Mody received a magnificent ovation from the spectators."Bravo, Master" and "Brayo, Mody," were again and again called for the winner, The betting in this race was as follows:-
Zulu Chief had to be led to the post. "A capital start." Black Pansy was first after the first few laps from the drop of the flag, with Blue Nile second, and Zulu Chief third. Dwarf Pose was last. Past the Stand Southwold led the field from Black Pansy and Zulu Chief. This was the order as far as the climb when the second, third and fourth ponies raced level, and Dwarf Rose bringing the rear several lengths behind. Blue Nile and Zulu Chiel the raced up to the fender, and on entering the straight the best finish of the day was witnessed, Master, as usual, abandoned the rails for the
outer course, and steered the Nile home a com fortable winner with three lengths to spare, Black Pansy second, and Dwarf Rose a good third Zulu Chief was last,
got the leadership." Beti Wyvis. raced second. An excellent finish was' seen whoo No. Savvy' drew away from the bunch and levelled with Autumn Rose even gaining a slight lead within the last furlong from the Judge's Box. Autume Fose with much more in him' ag swered the whip and just beat No Savey by a neck, with Vagabond third. Ben Wyvis was nowhere.

I cannot be, therefore, that the Inspector- General should have waited aine months, until the troubla has been virtually overcome, before he takes a step which could only have been taken with any consistency immediately after the issue of the Customs Edict. HONGKONG CHINAMAN'S HEAVY LOSS
Wong Tai, the Chinese millionaire, who rap the smuggling deal in which it was attempted to take P20,600 pesos in Philippine silver currency, out of the country in defiance of the laws of the land, has lost his working capital and will have to sue the Government for its recovery should he care to attempt to recoup, reports the Manila Cablenew of 13th inst.
It will be remembered that the money was seized by the cuiloms authorities while in the possession of one of the Hongkong Manila steamers just as the vessel was about to steam Away. Wong Tai, who claimed to be the -owner of the silver which he declared had beep sent here for use in the purchase of old Mexi.. can silver, came to Manila na the Rub some weeks ago to show how the money got here and to try to recover it from the death grasp of the insular authorities.
fle made a strong effort to demonstrate that he bad not tried to get it out of the country but has tried to get it in where it belonged but had failed, as when he got it here he was unable 10 make the purchase of old silver he expected to and hence was about to take back his own. for the ins 45 years.
