APPRECIATION OF SILTER.
Silver currency countries are beginning to have their revenge on those in which gold has become the, metallle mandard of exchange. "It is true, the swing of the pendulum his pot gone far: mough to affect appreciably the prices of commodillas, Duding the last twelve monthe there has been an advance of 314, par ounce of silver, but that gain still leaves the anchangu valda so low is za. 8jd, par ouoco, a very different Bgore to the dod, per, ounce which was the tariff at the middle of last, can. tury, At one time, indeed, tha exchange with India actually mulcted the "grif" who took out a cash supply of gold, some zd, per rupes. A LIVING TOMB.
Kingston, Jamaica, Dec. 12. "Professor” W, A. Barclay, ■ negro hypnotist, "hypnotised his white, wife and, in the presence of a large gathering of the public, buried her in
a coffin under eight feet of earth.
The "professor" announced that he would leave his wife buried for six days. After dig ging her up again and reviving her, he declare ed she would be as fit and well as before burial,
The ceremony took place at Rockport Gar. dens. The grave was already dug when the *professor" and his wife arrived, and the coffin -was placed by its side. Mrs. Barclay slepped into the coffin, lay out at full length, and closed her eyes peacefully.
"Professor" Barclay, after making passes øver his wife's head, announced thật she was hypnotised and ready for burial. The coffin lid was then fastened down and the coffin was lowered into the grave. The earth was then piled on the coffin to a depth of eight lest.
Barclay assured the people that his wife was
•not in the'slightest degree affected by the buri. al and suffered no discomfort. In fact, he said, she was much better off than a good many who ware walking on the earth.
When the full detalls of the burial became known a storm of protest was raised in Kings

ton. Foster Davis, who has control of. Rock-Devanto, for Shanghai, port Gardens, sent à letter to Barclay đẹclaring | Chrangci zw, for Amay, that he had op idea of the realistle character of
the performance, and adding -
"In these circumstances I must ask you to be good enough to make arrangements to dislater your wife this evening."
•
Barclay, on receiving the letter, replied that be had pledged his word to the public that he would bary his wife alive for six days, and he did not mean to break it,
.
"Professor" Barclay kept his wife in her living tomb for top hours. She rested in a special coffin, to which two air shafts one foot and six Inches wide were attached.
The grave was surrounded by immense crowds day and night, and the negro nemple took turas at peering through the air shafts to satisfy themselves that she was not fad. She' remained, in the same rigid position through- out, and when she was brought up it was found that she was perfectly well, but had lon eight pounds in weight,
Barclay claims to have done the same thing before, and now offers to hypnotice any oth y person and keep him asleep in a glass case for advertising purposes in a show window
The blacks of Kingston are terribly excited over the Incident, and for several days were almost on the verge of hysteria.
