SIR T. LIPTON'S NEXT YACHT.
AW ACCOUNT OF THE DESIGNER. According to an English exchange Mr. Alfred Mylne, who has been commissioned by Bir Thomas Lipton to design a yacht, with which the Irish baronet 'expects to challenge for a race for the America's cup 10 be sailed .next year, although a young man, has already mado a mark as a designer He began to work on yachts in the office of the late George
L. Watson and was regarded by Mr. Watson
|
as a man of exceptional ability. He bas been designing yachts for 35 years and is now about 35 years old. Since the death of Mr. Watson, Mylne bas ranked second as 'n designer to William Fife, and in classes where they come together Mr. Mylne has been remarkably successful. Until his last commission Mylos has not turned out anything larger than s 52-footer, and his Moyana, built in 1903, is a wonderful boat and still a hard one to beat, Myin' in a progressive man. He is not 10 bound to British tradition as were Watson and Fife in turning but cup yachts. He knows that the challengers have often, if not always, bean beaten by their failure to build to the limit of the rule under which the yachts ware.constructed. Myins is now ready to go to the limit, as his reputation as a design
will depend very much on his success or failure. Shamrock IV. will be "Mylne's first large yacht, and whether he designs ber undar the old or the new rule of measurement, she will have many now ideas in form and construc xion. Mylne stared on his own account as a designer in 1895. At first he confined his efforts to small yachts, and had much success with Memsahib, Zitalla, Washti and others. These were followed in rapid succession by the Valmar, Jean, Shiroon, Susette Psyche, Gertrude, Cymbeline, Barabel and Thetis,
|
His first large yacht was turned out in 1898 Claud A. Ailen gave him an order for a 52- footer, and the Farag was the result of his work, In 1899 ho designed the Clyde z0-ton class, and these boats ware no good that they were raced mutil last season. In 1903 A, W. Leuchars andered a ja-footer, and George Conte ordered a41-footer. Both of these yachis have made history, The 52-footer Moyana is pronounced a masterpiece, Her draught and forward grip have. made her a rare boat turning to, windward She goes about with astonishing ease; with bar moderate overbang she reaches steadily and with speed and makes a fine showing down the wind. Mr. Mylne's second attempt in this class, the Britomarta, built last year for W. P. Burton, was hardly up to Moyaan's standard so far ms prizo winning goak, but Britomarte was something in the way of an experiment in dealing with the long overhang under the rule. Even now, with the experience Ms sokion to Judge by, it must not be 100 hasily decided that the yacht has fallen short of her designer's expectations, She was un
