Baron Aoki, at the Asiatic Society in New York, said that the Japanese were alive to the importance of the moral support of America during the war, the memory of which would continue as a living monument of the cordial friendship of the two nations. He scouted the idea that America and Japan were struggling for the control of the Pacific, and said that east Asia was big enough for the commerce of the whole world. In con-
clusion, he said that Japan was determined to defend the open door in Manchuria.

in cells, the same gang of officers went out & little after ten o'clock to execute the second warrant, on house No. 139. On entering they discovered a number of gamblers sitting on a mat, which was spread out on the floor, playing fan-tan. ha soon as it became known that there was trouble ahead, a man, whom the police alle ed was the runner of the place grabbed all the stakes that were the mat, leaving the coppers behind, put them into his pocket, and made a dash for freedom. The alber gamblers followed suit and pearly half of the men escaped either by the roof or across verandals, the police arresting five men only. The fourteen men were arraigned be fore Mr. F. A. Hazeland, at the Police Court, this morning, on a charge of gambling, two men from each house being also indicted for keeping a common gaming house, The evid ence of two of the lukongs was so conficting when they proceeded to enlighten the Court of what accurred when the raids were made, that the Court was forced to inform the officers that their story was not believed and gave instruc tipos to Sergeant Gordon to see that the twn Zukomes took na part in any other raid. He, however, found all the men 'guiky of being common gamblers only and convicled them The nine men in the first case paid $3 each, while the five men in the second raid handed out one dollar each,
THE LIEACHAU APPAIR.
QUESTION OF COMPENSATION,
Mr. F. W. Goldring for the defence.
Mr. Cardiner informed the Court that he was not ready to proceed with the case and applied for acother adjournment on the ground that he was not instructed,
Mr. Hazeland said that the case had once been adjourned and that Mr. Gardiner bad bad enough time to go into the case,,
Mr. Gardiner contended that be had only recently been engaged.
Mr. Hazeland stated that the summons was taken out more than a week ago and therefore the complainant had ample time to see her solicitor.
-
Mr. Gardiner observed that his client had no intention of engaging, counsel when she took, out the summons. But when she heard that the defendant was engaging a solicitor she decided to have one 100.
After more discussion, his Warship very unwillingly adjourned the case until to-morrow morning, and told Mr. Gardiner that he will grant no more remands in this case.
