APAN'S MARITIMEŇA PODE..

FURTHCOMING DEVELOPMENT.

As recent reports have already shown, Japan's maritime trade is apparently on the threshold of great development. In shipping circles the opening of many new lines la foreign countries is under projection and some of these wilt be carried into practice in the near future. Amongst the principal of these, as already briefly mentioned, is a new service to the South Sex Islands, on which'six steamers are to be employed, vizi—the' Toki-mars (3,433 1008), "Shishumarų (3,419 tons); Vedo-maru (3,317 tons), Hokuto-maru (3,282 tons), Ufina- maru (4,103 taas', and Takao-maru (3.153 tons). On the South American sarvice the two otsamera Itiùkushimä-maru (3,881 tons) and Daini Kofshira marm (4,367 tons) are to be put, while two more steamers, Chura-mar (2,900, tons) and Goin-maru (4,187 tone) will be added to the North American trade. Al. ready thrun steamers, total 7,333 tona, have ap- pasted on the Hongkong line; four steamers, total 8,290 tons, on the Vladivostok line; and 20 steamer, aggregating 25,000 tons, on the North China line. Besides these, there are many, now projects now under contemplation. This activity in Japanese shipping circles, taken in conjunction with the intended exten-" sion of the Siamese trade by the Nippon Yusen Kaitha, and of the South American trade by the

Toyo Kisen Kulsha, must be regarded as a most significant sign of the times

The Oriental Economist, writing with refer- ence to the subjects, remarks that some of there enterprises should fail but, taken as a whole, it will no doubt mean an ultimate suc cass of Japan's maritime trade. There can be no question as to there bein; much scope in the East and South seas for the development.

of the carrying trade. The trade is Hongkong Indo-China, Siam, the Malay Peninsula, the 'Philippini, Java, Sumatra, British India, and Australia has hitherto been principally in the hands of British and Germans. But owing to the inadequacy and inferior Dature of ships cm. ployed, iba insufficient number of voyages, the high rate of freight, etc.. the opening of new. lines seems very promising, Again the future of the Bouth and North American trade is ex- condingly reassuring The growth of closer. trade relations with, the United States and Canada and the gradual, encouragement of Japanese emigration into South American states and the development of trade with these countries fend a measure of additional asaur. ance to the success of japanese shipping en terprises.

*་

Despite the fact, the Tokyo journal continues, that the Chinese, Indians, and other Orientals are the best customers in the East, they have long suffered from the discriminating treatment at the hands of foreign shippets. For this rason, the latter, have become gradually alienated from their customers who are being more and more attracted toward the Japanese ships, whenever they are available Baving regard to the fact that the opening of a Japan- ese line between Hongkonu nod Siam owes its origin to the initiative taken by the Chinese. who have suffered from the tyranny of Ger. mans, the promising nature of the Japanese maritime trade, in the Eat may well be imagined.-Japan Chronicle.
