a charter or two effected, one at. 11. cents and Another at 10 centa, Saigon to anywhere else. we have not heard of any inquiries, ́except thai for Singapore a small carrier, was accepted
biz coats.
From Bangkok, the liners again supply all requirements, though early in the fortnight small outside steamer was reported taken up by natives at the reduced rate of 24/19 cents.
From Javs nothing is doing.
From Natuna Island an inquiry for Hong- kön, for a boat suitable to load long lengths of timber remains on the market, and another ans for a timber steamer from Singapore for Shang-. bai for middle of January loading. Charterers persist in quoting an impossible rate.
From the River there is not sufficiant cargo to keep the liners going, Current rate we make 13-14 candareens Wüha and Chinklang to Canton.
Hongay has had a charter at $1.75 per ton for Amoy.
From Moji, business done locally during the fortnight at $1.30. An order that was on for a boat at St.35 was eventually filled, in Japan Yen 1.25, and at the close, excepting small lot, there is no cargo offering for De-
ember loading,
On monthly basis, for short terms, two small steamers have been done for the Annam coast trade, as per list of settleménta Generally there is very little disposition shown to charter **on time" and we do not look for much being done on this basis next season, though tonnage is bath suitable and cheap,

SHANGHAI, DINNER PARTY,
Disturbed by Fire. Shook proves too Great for & Lady Guest...
A pleasant little dinner party at the home of a well-known resident of Bhangbai was much upset when, in the midst of the festivities, news aived that the residence of one of the guests was on fire. "The shock was so great when they told me that my house was ablazo,” said Mrs. A. Brunner, the lady in question, "that I was dumb-founded. My heart seemed to stand still. I at once hastened 'away to see what could be done to save my property. The pic tures, curios, and many objects "of 'value'and interest which I loved, and the accumulation of which had been the labour of years, were in jeopardy. I shall never forget that dreadful night. The 'horror of it broke me down, 1 began to suffer from what the Doctors described as Sprue, and it was not until Dr. Williams pink pills for pale people bajli up my shattered nerves and gave fresh strength to my run-down :
