occasions the news of the Impending tragedy spread through the city on the morning of

execution and the chief road was crowded at about to a.m., while the city police regulated the traffic which tended towards congestion at coriala parte, Presently their additional energy indicated that the procession was approach- ing, and soon appeared a hand of sweepers armed with leafy twigs followed by a squad of the city Arab police with fixed bayonets. sions, and here was collected a large but per fectly orderly crowd.

On arriving at the fatal spot the murderer was made to alight and kneel down while the policeman headed over charge of the cards to the executioner's attendants one of whom seix ing the end of the halter stood in front of the felon while others held the corda pinioning his arms behind. The executioner brandishing a broad heavy sword, keen as a razor, in a sug gestive fashion and prancing up towarda bis victim inquired in a loud voice: "Who author ises the execution?" The chief of the city police ao duty replied, "The Amin The executioner retired, and repeated the same movement, and the same question and, receiv ing the same answer, retired as before. A third time this ritual was performed. But now an attendant armed with a long needle pricked]; the condemned man in the back, causing him to start forward. At the same instant those holding the cords laid themselves back in op posite direction as in a tug-of-war contest with the result that the wretch's neck was stretched; | and following the reply of the chief of the police, the executioner's blade descended fair and true on the neck severing the head com- plately.

This mode of punishment though revolting to European idous, particularly on account of the publicity attaching to it, is no doubt salut. ary as a deterrent; for the executioner is a man of the sweeper class to be touched by whom is defilement and, lawless as Hyderabad is said to be, even a desperate character hesitates' be fare he renders himself liable to such a dreaded punishment.-Ex.
