We fail to see any reason why in Singapore there should exist no stock exchange, properly governed and chartered; since such an institution is, to say the least, a crying want. In Shanghai there is one in ex- istence, and the Stock Exchange established here undoubtedly makes for the stability and rectitude of the share market not only locally, but in China and Japan, where the would be investor or speculator is more or less in the hands of a broker. Our friends in the sister Colony should not hesi- tate to take this matter in hand and for-
mulate some scheme for a Stock Exchange Hke that in Hongkong, upon a properly con troiled, permanent hasis, in such a way as tu give an equal chance not only to the picked fen who want to deal in stocks-and can; but to the many who would like to do so and cannot, for want of a properly organized market-place in which to buy and sell.

We see, however, as yet, no rEASON for holders of sugar-shares in Hongkong to become apprehensive of the possibility that the eventual closing of the Japanese market' to our product will not be compensated in some measure by new and enlarged demands in South and Central China; still, it be hoves us to constantly keep the idea in view that in a few, perhaps a very few years, we must be prepared to see the market of Japan and North China go out of our grasp, and to make strong efforts to find and exploit other outlets nearer home which shall take the places of those we shall have lost."
