*MINING RIGHTS IN SHANSI.
The N., C. D. New ways—Latters from Shansi of date October 30 indicate that there bas been a time' of considerable excitement in the provincial capital. For some time there has been great dissatisfaction with the Govern nient for having granted mining rights in the province of Shanti.to the Peking Syndicate. An impression has gone abroad thaia monopoly, of midleg rights in the province has been given to the company and that even natives will not be permitted to work their own coal mines, but must perforce yield their property to the foreign 'speculator. :

A great funeral ceremony was held in mem ory of the aforesaid student, and his action was ino lauded as a glorious example, that it seemed at one time as if the whole 2,000 might at ons fell stroke commit suicide
The drst proposal made at the mass meeting was that they should declare their opposition to the Government even to the extent of rebel.

as being impracticable.
The second proposal was that all should abandon their studies and return to their homes, in the various prefectures through qut the province, nad there organize pub. lic meetings to arouse
antagonism popular against the Government for weakly granting a concersion to the Syndicate: also 10 subscriptions and buy the company,
The Governor visited the various colleges and urged the students to return to their studies, The principal of the Government Iniversity expostulated with the students of that institu" tion and pointed out that as they had no exact knowledge as to what, were the terms of the corcession granted to the foreign Syndicate by the Government, they ought not to act hastily and risk bringing calamity on themselves and their provinces. In the end wiser counseli prevailed.
Work in the different colleges is now going on as usual, but there is a good deal of sup pressed excitement in the atmosphere.
The influence of many of the students, who have been to Japan on their compairints, is so pernicious that the Governor has now decided to send a large number of the students to Wes- tern countries instead of to Japan.
· SMUGGLERS IN SIAM.
Excias Officer'a Unpleenand. Expericacom For 36 years Mr. R. J. Cibbous of Siam held the portion of Chief Inspector in the Bangkok Spirit Farm, and during that time he had many Strange adventures and experiences. "Often I had to wade through water waist deep when in pursuit of Spirit smugglere," said he in the course of conversation recently, "and it was through getting soaking wet in this way that I fell victim to a severe attack of theumatism some nine years age. The fact that no longer suffer cow is solely due to Dr. Williams' pink pills for pale people.
These pills are marvellous and I strongly recommend all sufferers from theumatism to try them."
Preusd to give further details Mr. Gibbons proceeded as follows:-The rheumatic pains first appeared in my right elbow. Then they travelled up to the shoulder and down to the leg. My left knee and ankle were stacked, the paini also appeared in my back. In course of time I became quite helpless ja every way, and so painful were my joints that I could not bear being placed on anything soft such as a bed; I had to lie on's mat on the hard floors. At one time I was hid up in this way for a month, suffering excruciating pain.
Of course doctors were consulted about my case; I also took many kinds of patent medi. cines, but all these did but little good. Some times I was better and sometimes worse, apa this state of things continued fr about. four years. Then one day I read in the newspaper
a case similar to mine having been cured by Dr. Williams' pink pills.. I decided to give those pills a trial and bought some at once here in Bangkok. Before had finished the, Grat bottle I felt much better Headaches from which I was a frequent sufferer ceased. By the time I bad Beished the second battle I could move my arm and legs and could sit up. in bed. To make my story shori, I went ou taking Dr. Williams' pink pills until I found myself completely cured, and now I am as strong and hearty as i could wish. I have no objection to what i have said on this subject being made public."
