AN ARTIST'S MODEL

PATHETIC STORY OF HER LIfe in London.

+

A pathetic tale was told at Clerkenwell by Florence Tucker, aged 18, who was charged with abandoning her two-months'-old boy at a Lansdowne place, St. Pancras."

To the relieving officer the girl said: "I left my home in January last-Laurel Cottages, Upper Hall, Farpham, Surrey—where I was reriding with my parents, and came to London to earn'my living as un'artist's model,

-"In May Inst I had to leave my work, and in June my baby was born. I did not let any of my friends know where I was.

FIGURE RUINED.

"I had the baby registered in the name 'of Francia Mansfield. I kept the child until August, and went to work as an artist's model, but my figure was ruined, I looked it and' thin, so much so that I had to leave,

"Elsing out of employment and having no money my landlady told me she could keep me no longer. I took the baby to the Found. ling Hospital, Guilford-st., and told them that I wanted to leave the baby thers and how I was situated. They refused to take it in, and they told me to go and find the father.

On Friday, 31 Aur, I left the child on a doorstep is Lansdowne place, as near as pos. sible to the Foundling Hospital, because I thought it would be picked up and well looked after by someone.

I then went back to my lodgings and told my landlady that I had taken the child home, to my mother.

"I tried to ici, work again, bat my health was so bad, I could not get any, so I went to my grandmother al Edioburgh-rd., Nottinghill, yesterday.

When I saw the account in the newspaper

1 fainted, I then told my sister all about it, and she advised me to go to the infirmary and

"A HAPPY ENDING,"

In reply to Mr. Rose, the prisoner said abe would not have left child but that she and the haby were starving and she had not a panay la the world,

Mr. Ricketts said the guardians wished; to discuss the matter with the prisoner. Owing to. the prominence given to the case some people wished to adopt the child and the matter was likely to have a happy ending.

Mr. Rose remanded the girl is her own bail.

HOUSE OF RICHES.

LONELY WOMan's House FILLED WITH

WEALTH.

Starling revelations have followed the death of a lonely old woman, Mrs. Agnes Hear!, who inhabited a boure in the poorest querier of Rothesay, Buteshire.

"The police, on entering this house of such a mean exterior, found it furnished in most luxurious style, and full of evidences that the owner was possessed of considerable wealth. Struck by the gorgeous surroundings, the- silk and satin dresses everywhere observable, the police started on 'a tour of 'discovery. to one bedroom they came upon a large safe con. taining £1,280 in gold, notes, and foreign bilik, the males being on almost every bank in the United Kingdom, and valued from £1 to £50 in value.. The bills were chiefly for German marks, Danish and Norwegian currency, and American dollars...

MOULDERING MONEY.

Some of the Scotch and English notes word badly frayed at the edging, showing constant handling, or a lengthened period of repass in the strong box. Some of them, onlng to damp and mildew, were mouldering away and al most unrecognisable. In the same receptacle the constabulary found a draft on the Bank of Ireland for £600, and a post office bank ́book with a credit of £6a Bs. 6d.

This was

not ali. Two large American trunks, when opened, disclosed, carefully ar ranged and piled on top of each other, a "Zarge quantity of gentlemen's pocket tandkerchiefs, made of the finest silk and cambric, some with monograms, and qhers having crekis› woven into the corners.

A large butter box was found in another room packed with silver watches and chains while in the room where decussed was dis covered were two other boxes filled with ladies, and gentlement gold watches and chains, bracelets, scarf-pins, rings, studs, cuff-links, etc,

SET WITH DIAMONDS. Some of the scarf-pins and rings ware est with diamonds and other gems, one is par 'ticular being worth at least between £400 and floo. Some of the watches were pré- sentation affairs, others had monograms and crests emblazoned on the case. They wera by makers in almost every centre of the watch making industry in the Kingdom.

There were cameo brooches of the rarest

descriptions, and quaint design; but what caused the greatest surprise was the discovery of a small hat box filled with 1.0.U.'s indicat ing that they had evidently been the property. of one accustomed to advance money on securities,

+

In a lumbar room was a number of costly oil painting and in a ́l, 12 marble clocks were, found.

How all this came to be there is a mystery, In several large buckets the money and valuables were conveyed to the police station.

A THEORY, Rumour says deceased inherited the larger portion of the wealth through her husband, who died some months ago, to whom it bad been bequeathed by his mother, who many yekrago acted as housekeeper to as ecceny." LD.tric Scottish gentleman of independent moans,
