PREVENTING A RICH FAMME. Owing to the lack of rain this year the rice cip in te provirge of Kwangsi has been very agre, with the result that prices have mount. rapidly and there was some fear that a famine might ensure unless the Government came to the rescue. Viceroy Shum has now wired to the anthorities in Kwangsi that he is considering the advisibility of shipping rice to the province so that the prople may not suffer, the rice to be sold at cost price. Yesterday a Laoi and others in Kwangsi communicated to the Viceroy that they had remitted the sum of 40,000 laekk to the Sin How Kok for the pur chase of rice which it is intended to dispose of to the people at the lowest price. The Viceroy has accordingly structed the Customs and like auiorities that the shipment in question will be made hee of duty and he has asked them to grant a clearance as soon as possible.

KIDNAPPING Å GIRL,
PRISONER SET TO GAOL,
After being confined in gaol for about five weeks pending settlement of negotiatious between the Hongkong, and Canton Govern. meals, the case against a man named Lum U, who was charged with kidnapping, came to a conclusion at the Police Court this aftempon, before Mr. H. H. J. Gompertz. -
Inspector Collett, of No. 7 Police Station, conducted the case on behalf of the police, and Mr. H. J. Gardiner, of Mr, O. D. Thomson's office, represented the defendant.
The kidnapping occurred on or about the 12th or 13th June last. The girl who was. kidnapped was named Wong Yang Mui, and and is about twenty years of age. She lives at No. 35, Belcher's Street, West Point. The de- fendant, who was known to the girl for some time prior to the kidnapping, suggested to her that she would do well to go with him to visit his relatives. The girl consented, but instead of going where he suggested he took the gil to Canton and from there to the Chan Chuen village, where he sold her to the keeper of a house of ill-fame for 480 tales. He then returned to Hongkong. In the mean.
