As to the scarcity of the fungus, I can sup post the gatherer's statement. When I met him he was on his way to the market with his half-load, and on getting there the total mom. ing's supply did not.weigh ten stones, And for several days in succession inquiry showed that the country fields continued to give a very dia- appointing yield.

who hunts the mushroom must have a good constitution, and phyfically be as hard as nails. The dew seems to have a good deal,to-do
with the development of the wild mushroom, "They seem to come," said Thy informant,

I've got some gránd stuffin the helds when you couldn't ses a yard in front of you. You will have heard people talk about secing mushrooms actually grow. For aught I know they may have, because they jump up in so time, and fade almost as quickly. You may pass a patch of ground in a good season, perhaps, and find nothing, but if you come back a little while after you will mayhap pick up enough, to fill your hamper. The kinds of mushrooms we chiefly get around here are the Jocks, or horse-mushroom, the medium pinki, the 'buttons, and the 'smaller, blacks. The Jocks' are the big, broad-canopied mushroom with a black under-surface. They are used for making ketchup. I have picked Jocks' with, a diameter measuring fourteen or sixteen inches, and even bigger specimens have been found. The medium pinks are chofce stuff, and always "sell well if the market isn't overstocked. The smaller blacks are about the same size; the buttons' are the baby mushrooms, very tasty, but you have to gather a long time before fill- ing your hamper,"
What about the poisonous varieties?" 1 asked,
"Oh! they are few indeed. There are scores of sorts, they tell us, but the poisonous mush. rooms, if you like to call them mush- rooms, are not only comparatively few in Goods not cleared by the roth instant, at number, but they may be easily detected 4.M., will be subject to rent.
