cburia Company debentures. It is poluted ont that the company will not call up more than Y2,500,000 in private shares for the pre sent, and has resolved to raise the balance, y98,000,000, by an issue of debeatures abroad, If the Chinese Government takes any share in the company, which seems unlikely-the de», bentures can be reduced by that much. But against this suggestion it must be remember. ed that the guarantee of the interest and prin cipal of the debentures by the Government bas to be approved by the Diet, and therefore negotiations for the issue of debentures cannot be undertaken for the present. It is believed that Mr. Takahashi is also commissioned to negotiate certain Municipal leans for the conversion of high interest bonds. VALUATION.

On Saturday, reports the Free Preis of August 27th, further evidence was taken by Mr. Colman in the preliminary inquiry into the charges against Mr. H. C. Hogan and Mr J. B. Robertson.

Mr. P. J. Sproule, the Deputy Public Proso. cutor, conducted the prosecution, Mr. W. A. N.' Battenberg appeared for Mr. Hogan and Mr. F. M. Elliot for Mr. Robertson.

Mr. Sproule said there was a certain matter which he felt it his duty to mention. This was a latter which had appeared in the "Fres Press," He then read a letter from Mr. J. T. Lloyd commenting on statements made by Mr. Coghlan in the witness box at the last bearing only say that it was a mean and spiteful at of the case. Regarding the latter he would

tempt to lower the reputation of a successful business rival. He was sure the Court would not pay attention to the letter, but he had to draw attention to a deliberate attempt to pre-

Mr. Elliot, counsel for Mr. Robertson, said that he regretted the letter had appeared. It had appeared absolutely without the know- ledge of himself or his client. The Court would see that if the defence wished to bring such evidence they could easily call it, 'When the letter was published he saw Mr. *1.
