INTO GREAT BRITAIN.

"Yacht" is one of many marine terms im

ported into English (and indeed every Euro- pean language) from the Dutch. It is derived from the verb: "jachten jagen,” to hurry, to chase, to hunt. And, like the word, so the sport of yachting-that is, taking up shiling for its own sake no a mánly'excicise-orig. inated in Holland. The Phenicians, Greaks and Romans had their pleasure craft pro- palled by the galley s'ave, however, these floating barges had merely some ornamental snil. There is no, evidence"that even those superb shipwrights of Venice and Genoa were over employed by the amateur sailor of the Alteenth century. On the other hand, it is quite certain that before to the "jacht," a ship.not for purposes of either commerce or war, was known in Holland. The absolute flatness of the country, its great network of jaland waterways, the proximity of many fourishing towns, had always favoured navi gation. In their life and death struggle with Spain the Dutch made the waters their bul warks, on the water they wrested the sceptre of colonial empire from Philip's hand, and is the flush of victory it became the favourite scene of their recreations.

Especial mention is made by the chroniclers of yachts belonging to the Ext of Leicester during his itay in the Netherlands (1587+0588) and to Maurice of Oraige. We know their igventories, but unfortunately do pictures hav» been preserved. The growing popularity of the iport is testified to by the fact that in 1629 sharbour for yachts was laid out in Amsterdam, and it was soon followed by two other. Thes. harbours were undoubted! the first of the kind in the world. The yacht owners formed three chattered guild, with regular constituN. tions and officers, after the manner of the time, and once a year they kept holiday. Those were the palmy days of magnificent proces. ́sions, glittering groups, living pictures, pf the guilds of thetoric in which Motley is eloquent. They had their counterpart on the River YPaklat, Ger. s.s., 1018, H. Demes, 23rd Aug.. Bangkok 16th Aug,, Rice and Wood,--- before Anigerdam. Every year on two con.

B. & S. secutive days in July the guilds squadrons sail Petrarch, Ger. 4., 1,252, R. Hadje, 12th Janr, ed forth to hold their grand parades, mimic fights and concerted manovring. This "Ad- miraalzeilen," as it was called, dates 'from the Steenth century The merchanmen engaged in the Bde tride combined in large fleets, and had to arrange for their own defence against enemies. With this end in view, they were, annually drilled by an Admiral. In later times the duty of protection fevolved on. the regular navy, but the name and practice of Admiraalzeilen was retained, and survives till, this day.

King Charles II. may be said to have intro- duced the sailing spon le England. During his long exile in the Netherlands e acquired a good knowledge of ships, and he had, more. aver, all the instincts, of a yachtsman. At Bresla, where he happened to be when restored to the throne, he received a special embassy from the Dutch States-Geng ral. A fatika of yachts was put at the disposal of the King and his suite. Charles traveled to The flague in a yacht built for the Prince of Orange, and ex- pressed himself su delighted with it that the States then begged to present him with one like it. It is this yacht Mary which Samuel Pepys mentions in his diary as making its appearance on the Thames in 1660. It was 52 Jeet long, had 19 feet beam and drew to feet of „water. In 16ft andther yacht from Holland, the Bean, followed. All the first English Z. yachts were close copies of hese boats. Indeed, when in 1730 the first English yacht club was founded, the Cork Harbour Water Club, the Skerry-fooker was the popular yacht, and a very Dutch looking craft it was.-The Outlook
