The village is situated in the valley behind the Bluff, at the back of the Yokohama Nursery Co., along the road to the Race Course, and is generally known as the "dirty village." It is mostly inhabited by the poorer classes, and the houses were of the dimsiest, nature and crowded together.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, nor has the house where it started been accurately located. The police are, however, of the opin ion that it originated in a house occupied by spawnbroker named One Hart, altuated at. No. 3084 Yamamoto-cho, -chome, Aizawa, Wirrever it started, the fire, fanned by a southwesterly wind, rapidly assumed farge, proportions, spreading in two duections and igniting house after house with marvellous rapidity. As at the time the fire broke out most of the firemen were away from their homes in pursuit of their respective avocations, it was fully half-an-hour before the fire brigades made their appearance on the scene, and even then not much could be done, since, although water mains are laid through the district, the pressure on the hydrants was so small as 10

After three hours' difficult operations the. firemen finally succeeded in checking the farther progress of the flames, but not until nearly the whole locality had been destroyed, An hour later, that is at about 9.30, the fire was Aually extinguished.
