THE YOKOHAMA ARSON CASE.

FURTHER PARTICULARE,

On the 15th, in the criminal section of the Yokohama District four, Takahashii Eikichi, a "naturalised Japanese (formerly F. J. Curtis,

British sabject), charged with arson, was sentenced to twelve years' penal servitude.

Judge Satomi in delivering sentence, reports the Japan Herald, said the Court presumed that no April 19th this year the accused com- mitted arson in his own house for the purpose of obtaining the sum of Y1000 to which hin furaiture was insured.. The not came under

the purview of Article 402, but in consideration of the fact that the deed was not consummated the sentence would be commuted by two degrees, and accused sentenced to twelve years' ponal servitude. The cost of the trial was to be borne by the accused,

Five days are allowed the accused in which 10 appeal against the decision, and our cratem. porary learns the accused has notified his in- tention of appealing.

JAPANESE COTTON GOODS IN MANCHURIA,

A GREAT MARKET.

Mr. Yamanobe, President of the Osaka Cotton Spinning Company, has just returned from a business tour in Manchuria and Korea. He spent about a month on the journey, and has given his views on the prospects of the Japanese colion goods market, and says the prospects, are very promising. The goods shipped for Manchuria during last month by the Sanyei Kumiai, a syndicate for the export of cotton goods, nmounted to 1,000 bales. The syndicate is prepared to ship 1,500 bales this month, 2,000 bales next month, 2,500 biles in August, and 3,000 bales in September.

"In our eyes," says Mr. Yamanobe, "the purchasing power of the Manchurians is almost boundless. The inhabitants of Manchuria ure

much better off than the Koreans, and is addition to this advantage, about zu do persons are yearly flowing into the country "from Shantung and thereabout. These new settlers add to the demand, and it is 'difficult to im- lagine how greal wil grow the consumption of colton goods in Manchuria, Japanese sheet- ing which have been placed in the market by

Shipping.
