Black's favourable report of his staff and adds a tribute to his own efficient supervision of the department The Chemical Examiner and his slaff are kept busy all the year round testing and analysing far various purposes articles pod products which come to them from all quarters.

It is in the work of the Medico-Legal Depart ment that the chief interest of the report fias. Filteen hundred and nineless medico-legal cases were investigated, being mostly cases of poisoning by opium. The Police' Surgeon of Calcutta sent the viscera of 93 human parsons for analysis. In 49 cases he did not give any opinion to the cause of deaths, and, in 23 of these prison was detected, seven cases in which death was attributed " to natural causex, poison was detected in three. In Bo cases sens, by civil surgeons in which no opinion aito"cause of death was given, poison was detected in 19; in 17 cases in which death was attributed to natural cautes poison was detected in four: Aistant Sur

cons seņi 215 cases, 59 cases of polson being detected in 175 of "no opinion," and two in 33 of "natural causes," The Civil Hospital Assiste anis sent 123.cases. Poison was detected in 24 cases in which no opinion had been sent up, and in 6 cases out of 15 attributed to na tural causes,

very striking. A case of aconka `poisoning in which there was absence of the usual post mortem signs of-gastro-intestinal irritation was referred by the Civil Surgeon of Tippers. The Civil Surgeon held the post morism exami« nation on the body, and found the stomach and intestines all healthy. He ascribed death to syncope, but he was unable to ascertain the cause of syncope. As there was suspicion of poisoning in the case, he sent the viscera and the urine drawn from the bladder of the deceaued for analysis Aconite, was detected in the viscera as well as the urine,

Another case of aconite poisoning was re- poned by the Assistant Surgeon of Raniganj in which there was total absence of all port mortem signs of irritation. The police stated that some poison was administered with sweat- ments to one Niroda Bagdlui and her son aged one-year. The mother and child both died. The Assistant Surgeon, who held the post martim examination, noticed no abnormal signs the stomach and ininstines in either care; but as there was a history of poisoning, he sent the viscera of the mother and of the child for analysis. Aconiti in marked quan- tity was detected in the viscera of both the persons.
