MAGNITUDE OF BRITISH EMPIRE'S TRADE,

SOLD IN A YEAR.

The magnitude and significance of the figures regarding the trade of the British Empire, given in a Board of Trade returu just issued under the title "Statistical Abstracts from the British Empire," can hardly be grasped. It shows that the total trade of the British Empire in the year 1904 was £1,305,283,090.

Dividing the over-sea traile into sectious, 73.3 per cent of it was foreign countries; 26.7 per cent of it was between different parts of the Empire.

The diamonds produced in the Empire were worth £6,451,000. Of these, 2493432 came from Kimberley, £16,395 from British Guiana, and £11,670 rom Australia.

It is surprising at the first blush to find that £13.925 worth of gold was dug up in the United Kingdom. The total production was £1,703,000, of which 16 millions each came from the Transvaal and Australia, 34 millions from Canada, zị from India, and nearly two millions from New Zealand.

The Empire produced 12,600,000 gallons of wine, 381 mullian pounds of tea, and 57 million cwl, of raw sugar.
