WHAT IT WILL LO.
A woman buys a sewing machine for what it will do; not as an article of tumiture. A man carries a watch to tell him the time; not as an investment of surplus capital. The same principle when one is it. We want the medi cine or the treatment which will relieve and cure. The friend in need must be a friend indeed-something, or somebody, with n

The object of the expedition was to capture Shifara, an Abyssinian outlaw, who had been SOCKS (Linen) LADIES AND murdering and raiding, and who had establish- ed himself beyond the Abyssinian posts. It was accompanied by the Secretary of the British Legation at Adis Abeba. Over 2,000 persons were engaged in the work, including 1,000 of the Emperor Menelik's troops, the whole being upder the command of the Abys sinian Filaurari-(General) Damti.

selves amid the thick elephant grass, oft. high, bordering the path, and it became necessary lo LINEN HANDKERCHIEFS, JAVA fortify the camps and make zarebas every night. SENONGS.
During the journey several of the expedition were murdered, others died of sunstroke and want of water, and large numbers of animals were speared. The males also suffered heavily from the climatic difficulties, and there was considerable mortality among them
Although the expedition did not succeed in capturing Shifar, who bolted and surrendered to the nearest Sudan Government post, it afford. ed an interesting insight into the Abyssinian methods of warfare and guvernment. The route followed from Adis Abeba to the south west passes through the little Mahometan Siate of Djinuma, which is quite unique. It is pre- sided over by its own king, Abagifur, the last of the rulers from whom Menelik has his title of "King of Kings of Ethiopia,”
Prices exceptionally cheap,
Inspection earnestly solicited.

The Djimma king owns allegiance to Mene lik, but enjoys a complete independence in the administration of his country.

Beyond Djma and Kaffa lie ferite and well-watered but mountainous countries, whose inhabitants are all alike called. Shankállas by the Abyssinians. Some of the tribes were splendid men, rich copper in color, well built and muscular, with curious patterns burnt on chest and thigh, and innocent of all clothing save their armlets and head ornaments of iron brass, or ivory, a few beads, perhaps a girdle of
grass.tope or raw hide, a spear, and, on gala occasions, a leopard-skin and two or three vstrich feathers marked the big chiefs,
While the expedition was fitting out at Majų,
the Abyssinian post in the southwest, the local Shankalla King died. He was sewn up in a green-hide bag in a sitting position and placed on the floor of his hut, and from miles round his subjects came to the lying-in-stale.
A DANCE OF DEATH.
In the heart of the forest the expedition came suddenly upon a small clearing of hard-beaten etay; all round were thick rows of huge" gogo" palms, and oe.one side four spacious "well- thatched buts and a curious mound, probably uncrificial. By the side of the huts thousands ol cow bells, sweet in lone as thiose in a Swiss upland valley, were hung on, rade trestles and swung backwards and forwards by bands of wamen under the direction of an old witch.
