"DROWNING" FATALITY.

AT TOLO HARBOUR.

A sad drowning fatality occurred in Tolo Harbour, near Taipa, after five o'clock Inst evening and it resulted in the death of a stoker on board police pinnace No. 3. How the fatality occurred no que on board can say, but the Europeans were suddenly startled by an alarm given by the cook of "Stop launch, man overboard.". At the time the alarm was given the pinnace was going at full speed, but a boat was anon launched and they made for the place where the unfortunate stoker was laït seen. They could not get there in time and the stoker sank when, the rescuing boat was about toolt. away. It is, however, surmised that deceased, who went to the stern of the pinnace on some business, must have lost his balance and dropped overboard. The pindace cruised around the scene for about half-an- hour, but nothing more of the stoker was seen, The launch then steamed to Hoogkong.

Lord Elgin has read à despatch from the Governor of Natal, to which he had replied, that he, in the light of information furnished, recognised that the decision in this grave matter, rested with Natal.

The Governor's despatch detailed the cir- cumstances of the court-martial and the resignation of the Ministry and concluded with a trust that His Lordship would now withdraw the suspension, which was exciting an intense feeling.

Lord Elgin's reply said that he never in

tended to interfere with the action of a re- sponsible government; 'but, in view of the presence of British troops in the colony, he was bound to obtain full information on , such a matter, which information he regretted that the Governor had not supplied earlier.

Mi, Otto Kong Sing said this was a claim for money due under two Chinese documents, signed by the defendant, and showing that the sum claimed was due by him to the plaintiff. He produced those decuments, which were in effect promissory notes.

Defendant said he was a student, living with his father. He admitted signing the documents now before the Court, but said the debt w not due for money lent but on a gambling transaction.
