VALUE OF DETERMINATION.
There is a certain characteristic frequently encountered in persons of refined sensibilities which proves a serious handicap to them when ever they attempt to gain their due in any walk of life
This is an interior lack of self-assertion; a shrinking too easy deference to the wishes or the convenience of others at those time when the wishes and convenience of one's self should ba consulted first.
"This quality is almost invariably found in patrons noted for exceeding, sensitiveness and gentleness, and whereas it is considered by many a trait deserving much prains, it may and often does show itself to be a serious defect of character.
....
Gentleness, unselfishness, patience, thought fulness of others, all these are admirable in any. character when hacked by a firm realization of one's own rights.
When not so sustained they cease to be virtues and become weaknesses instead. The element of firmaess, the quality of backbone, la .estantial before any character can become
thoroughly sound and admirable.

Clearances at the Harbour Offios. Duigi Maru, for Swatow.
adres Rickmers, for Swatow,
I used to think it a grout injustice of fate whenever I saw hoggish, selfish, vulgar people rushing
and getting more than their due, while the unselfish parsons who considered others first failed to even approach their right: fal inheritance. But now I can fairly see that despite the unenviable manners of the pushing, stralion, for Manila, grabbing, determined person, he possesses a certain irresistible quality, which it will be boove the shrinking ones to cultivate.
This compelling quality constitutes the secret of one man's success and another's failure. It explains why one person can com- mand any favour while another equally deser- ving finds his slightest wishes ignored,
11 discloses the reason why one wife rain completa control of her husband's pay envelope while another is forced to beg her liege lord for pin money.
The secret of the star boarder is likewise explained. You know the confident, aggies sive boarder who arrives late for meals, dos't you, yel who takes his seat with an assurance not to be denied? He may have seriously disarranged the household, machinery, but he does not care in the least. What happens? He is treated with the utmost consideration served, with all due respect and solicitude. And the conscientious, apologetic, considerate boarder, who, under the same conditions, is actstaly conscious of having inconvenienced the cook and the landlady-what of him? He is slighted, frowned upon, treated with distinct disfavour, as though his tardiness were the un- pardonable sin.
The loud-voiced woman boarder, who fusses and storms and complains, is the one who gets her windows washed, her window shades re- paired and her mom kept free from dust, while the soft-voiced, sweet-tempere i woman is com- pelled to put up with blurred windows and all the other undesirable things she has not the
nerve to resent.
What, usually, happens as the result of such seeming irony of fate is just this: The refined, gentle person is tempted to believe that refine ment and unselfishness do not pay and that only by bullying others and walking over them can one succeed. This conclusion is far from correct. Neither the h geish person nor the too considerate one is right,
Refinement never yei prevaried any one from claiming his due. Sweetness and gen. tleness of manner are not against making a way in the world, but rather for it.
The root of the matter lies in the interior lack of firmness and self-a sertion.
I think nowhere have I seen a clearer expia nation of this subject than in the letters of Lord Chesterfield in his son. Over and over did Chesterfield repeat the maxim of which he declared, "I do not know any one rule sa un exceptionably useful and necessary in every part of life. Here is the maxim: 'Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re." Chesterfield explains: A man who is really diffident, timid and bash- ful, be his merit what it will, never can push himself in the world.. * * * The forward, the bustling, the petulant, will always get the better of him. The manner makes the whole difference. What would be impudence in one mander 'only a proper and decent assurance In another. Á man of sense and knowledge in the world will assert his own rights and pursue his own, objects as steadily and intre. pidly as the most impudent man living, and commonly mora ro; but be has art enough to give an outward air of modesty to all he does."
The reßned person need not abandon his gentle manner in order to command his due. Let his manner be pleasing, but at the centre

FEROCIOUS CANNIBAL PLANTS,
The subject of carnivorous and death-dealing plants has collated the pens of imaginative writers time out of mind. Of such was the story of the upas tree of Java, published in the letter of "a Dutch physician" in, the London Magazine" in 1783, which hoaxed Erasmus Darwin and the world, and proved to be nothing but an invention. What was long considered a myth is now proven a substan- fisted fact, for a plant has been discovered in Sumatra that gives out poisonous exhalations, An intrepid Frenchman had been told by the natives of a giant lily to be found in the pathless forests of the interfer, that gave out death-dealing fumes, and after a long search he found several. The largest discovered covered an area of some sixty feet with its evil smelling growth. The spadix was over six feet high, and the spiked leaves from ten to twelve feet long, At sundown and about an hour before suarise the poisonous fumes were found to be most virulent, A dog, a goat, and other small animals tethered in the vicinity were found dend and cold in the morning. The discoverer himself was taken violently if while examining this vulture among es. In the depths of tho bell-shaped flowers were found the bodies of gumerous small animals and birds, So the old legend of the upas tree has la a measure be come verified. On the shores of Lake Nicaragua is to be found an uncanny product of the vegetable kingdom, known among the actives by the expressive name of "the devil's noose How delighted Fos would bays been to make this cannibal plant the subject of one his weird stories. Dunstan, the naturalist, discovered it not long ago while wandering on the shores of the lake. Attracted by cries of pain and terror from his deg, he found the animal held by black, sticky bands which had
