LIFE-BEL75, AT SKA. N-

EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS ON BOARD BRIT Apropos the sensations! allegations of the uselessness of life-beits on board the Valencio, London paper states that under the new Marine Law of the Uited States a cures. pondent had been visited in his cabin by a steward, who structed him in the art of adjusting a life-belt. He demand for a like rule la British vessels has brought many met. sages from correspondents in English seaport

tawps.

To fit a life-belt to one's body presents no great difficulty, to an Intelligent man in his calm wite, but the huddie of fightered pas sengers during as accident at sea. And it less: easy, as many a shipwreck has testified, for bodies often drift ashore on which the belt which should save life has shifted to the fet and drowned the wearer. Inquiries at the Bristol steamship offices show that passengers on long voyages are usually taught to put on the belts. At Southampton, Plyn outh, and Hull no such rule is known. One official at 'Southampton was of opinion that such instruc tions would add to the woes of timid passen gers. The Liverpool liness carry their life-belts In open racks beside each sleeping beith, the White Star, Allen and other lines displaying explanatory pictures and instructions. The Tees Shipping Company, of Newcastle-on- Tyne, put a belt under the passenger's had and their representatives are of opinion that no Instrument is nec, psary in fastening the strings, which have but to be tied around the body. The cross-channel steamers trust their officers and semen to help the passengers in the moment of danger, their life-fackers being stored in full view on the decks, the turbine steamers carrying as many as 1,700.' The chief service of the life-belt, however, is to give con fidence in the passenger, for in most cases cold or exhaustion on makes an end of the un happy one who finds himself adrift in the sen with a life-belt under his arms.
