it in satisfactory to note that the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company is keeping a keen eye on possible business, and is prepared to undertake works of considerable importance at a rate which is unapproachabis by others. ROYAL ARTILLERY JA NAVAL VÅRD.

The league football has started. "The first round in the competition was played on the Naval football ground, at Happy Valley, on. Saturday afternoon, between the above-men-

For a few minutes, after the sphere was set arelling the Naval Vard went down and commenced ttacking, and in a shot at goal Patterson had to go in length on"the ground to clear, amidst great cheering. That was all the Naval Vard did in the match, besides abiaining two corners. The soldiers

had an easy game, and Wilks opened the score, which ai balf-time, numbered four to mil. In the next hall, the Naval Yard put up a stronger defence, the Artillery, only being able to get the ball bome twice. the Naval Yord played a plucky game, nevertheless. Result: Artillery 6; Naval Yard o.

FREIGHT.

Writing on 17th Jan, Messrs, Lamko and Rogge aiale:The issue of this fortnight's cir- cular is two days earlier owing to the Chinese New Year holidays intervening.

The interval under review has brought, no

improvement in freights. For prompt or early loading there is practically no demand, handy- sized steamers continue to be laid up for want of anything paying offering. For forward, in some few instances inquiries have led to business, in others the low rates quoted failed to attract attention, and, altogether, de-. mand for any dates has been insignificant. Freight homeward from, the rice potti are bet- ier, notably from Bangkok, and more steamers are now named, Norwegian and German, for which owners have either accepted homeward business or are in treaty for such,

The Saigon crop is certainly much later than anticipated, inasmuch as also for February in- quiries after tognage are practically nit as yet, two small carriers are reported fixed for early. February loading Saigon/Philippines at 28, and 29 cents respectively. For Java, noitesh busi- nest appears to have resulted. For fapan, March loading, a medium-sized steamer has been done at so cents,

:

From Bangkok to this, port, this fortnight has witnessed the fixture of a suitable 'outsider at 18/21 cents per picul, the rate including a downward freight.

From Java, prompt, dry and wet sugar, a lump sum fixture is recorded at below last quotation. The demand is but slight at pre-

sebi.

From Iloilo to Ningpo, early February, charter is reported at 30 cents.

Concerning coal freights, there are boals at Northern and Southern Japan coal ports yn- able to secure paying charters for anywhere. Business is reported done in the North from Moji to Shanghai at less than St per ton, to this part as low as $1.10 per ton, locally business done for latter voyage at $1.40 and

From Kebao to Shanghai, prompt, $:.00 per ton has been taken, and from Hongay, end of February, to fengng and Singapore $2.75 per
